CITY BY-ELECTION COMPROMISE FAILS.
MR J. A. FLESHER WAS TO BE ASKED TO RESIGN. A proposal from the Citizens’ Association that Councillor J. A. Flesher should be invited to resign from the City Council in view of his continued ill-health, and that the Labour Party should not oppose the association’s nominee for the vacant seat, so long as the Citizens’ Association did not oppose the Labour nominee for the late Mr Cooke’s seat, was made to Christchurch Labour officials last week. The plan, however, has fallen through, owing, it is said, to Mr J. A. Flesher’s refusal to endorse it. The proposal, was well received in Labour circles, and would probably have l>een adopted, principally on the ground that it avoided the expense of an election. Now, however, both parties have reached a stalemate, and Labour is playing a waiting game.
