CHILDREN S CARNIVAL FOR CANCER CAMPAIGN

A kaleidoscopic scene was presented to the onlookers at the Winter Garden on Saturday afternoon, where a children’s fancy dress carnival was organ ised by Mrs W. J. Hunter in aid of the Cancer Research Campaign. The effort was a great success. The hall was filled with tiny tots and older children dressed in pretty and fantastic costumes which vied in gaiety with the clusters of multi-coloured balloons and streamers that were suspended about the hall. Later these balloons were distributed amongst the children each of whom also received a toy. On their arrival, Miss Muir and Miss Mulvany Gray, the judges, were each presented with a bouquet by Master Bryan Hunter. With the Grand March came the judging and presentation of the prizes, after which a variety programme was received with shouts of laughter. Included in the programme were items by Kotz, the conjurer, Barnado, the magician, and Cardel, with his talking dolls. A ballet, “The Wedding of the Painted Doll,” by Miss Iris Edmonds’s pupils, and “ The Staircase Ballet,” by Miss Bessie Macdonald’s pupils, made an interlude. In one corner of the room “ Winnie the Pooh,” “ Scatterjoy,” and “Aunt Pat” (Mrs 11. Wales and Miss May Brown) did a roaring trade with their bran tub and fish pond, while in another the Queen of the Gypsies and her attendants (Misses B. Guthrie, G. Maling, K. Hoare and P. Wynn-Williams) dispensed ice-creams and soft drinks. Following were the prize-winners:—Prettiest girl, Daphne Benson (Victorian Lady); prettiest boy, Bryan Hunter (Beau Brummel); most original girl, Betty Blair (Washer Lady) ; most original boy, Ernest Gibbons (Test Match) ; prettiest little girl.
