GOOD PLAY SEEN IN MATCH AT CARTERTON.
WAIRARAPA MEET HAWKE’S BAY SIDE,
Per Press Association. CARTERTON. June 28. Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay met at Carterton to-day in fine weather. There was a cold southerly breeze. The ground was in perfect order, and there was an attendance of 4000, Bay won the toss and elected to play with the wind. After five minutes’ play in front of the Wairarapa goal Evans had a good chance to goal, but missed. Wairarapa set up a passing rush, but Setford intercepted and passed for Mill to score in the corner. Evans failed to goal. Wairarapa followed the kick-out. and Jury punted to an opening. Corkill gathered and gave to Stringfellow, whom Evans pushed out at the corner. From the throw-in Mill passed to Corkill. who cut in and scored under the bar. Fuller goaled. Wairarapa D, Bay 3. In a strong Bay attack by ITeffernan, Roach and Grenside, Grenside fell when tackled in the corner, but scored. Evans failed to goal. Bay 6, Wairarapa 5. A good line kick by Wanoa carried play to the Wairarapa line, but the borne forwards were too strong. Stringfellow ran and carried play to the Bay line. The throw-in saw Mill cleverly evade four men and cut to the line, falling short. Give and take in the centre of ♦he field saw a shocking pass by Jury. Grant picked up and passed to M’Donald, to Grenside, but he was thrown out at the corner. Wairarapa drove play upfleld, but fine line-kicking, with the helping wind, continually put Wairarapa back in their own half. Rough and tumble near the Wairarapa line found Mills at the bottom of the pack, and he was awarded a try. Evans goaled. Bay 11, Wairarapa 5. From a Wairarapa attack Fuller kicked a fine goal from a penalty, making Wairarapa 8. By at once retaliated and Corkill got offside in front of the goal. Evans goaled. Bay 14, Wairarapa 8. Wairarapa had Bay in trouble, but failed to liter the score. The half-time score was: Hawke’s Bay 14, Wairarapa 8.
