WOOLSTON NOTES.

FANCY DRESS DANCE. The Woolston Public Library held its.annual fancy dress dance in the Druids’ Hall last Saturday evening. The winners of the prizes were as follows:—Best fancy costume, ladies, Miss M. Fordham (Day and Night) 1, Miss F. Griebel (Harem Lady) 2. Most original, Mrs Tucker (The New Health). Men: Mr L. Huston (Harlequin) 1, Mr E. A. Beaumont (Clown) 2. Most original, Mr R. W. Downie (Clock Tower). Novelties resulted:—• Lucky spot, Mrs Gracie and Mr R. H. Beaumont. Snowball, Miss E. Lilburne. Monte Carlo, Miss P. Southern and Mr T. Storey. The judges for fancy costumes were: Mr and Mrs Fawcett and Mrs O'Neill. Mr C. White’s Orchestra supplied the music, Mr R. H. Beaumont played extras, and Mr R. W. Downie was M.C. Among those present in fancy dress were:— Mrs Tucker (The New Health), Misses V. Pearce and M. Shaw (Two Black Crows), N. Richards (Pierrette), Mora Wilton (Pierrette), P. Beaumont (Ribbons and Patches), Myra Wilton (Toreador), T. Cooper (Ribbons), A. M’Donald (Safety First), G. Campbell (Little Girl), P. Southern (Bell Girl), M. Fordham (Day and Night), G. Fordham (Pierrette), F. Griebel (Harem Lady), R. Glaston-Berry (Early Victorian), Messrs E. Beaumont (Clown), H. King (Policeman), R. Downie (Clock Tower), J. Claud (Nigger), L. Huston (Harlequin) and C. Lilburne (Jester).

ANCHOR LODGE. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Anchor Lodge, U.A.0.D., was held in the Druids’ Hall on Tuesday, the Arch Druid, Brother Lawson, presiding. Immediately after opening the lodge, the A.D. requested the brothers to rise and stand in silence out of respect to a member of the lodge who had died in Ashburton. Brother C. Pease reported having attended the funeral. One 'new member was elected and duly initiated into the order, and another candidate was proposed. A maternity claim and sick benefits were passed for payment. It was decided to open the lodge next meeting night at 7 p.m. to enable the Royal Arch Chapter to take charge for the purpose of holding the annual Arch Druids’ competition. At eight o’clock the lodge adjourned to hold a social and dance. Music for the dance was supplied by a wireless set kindly lent by Mr R. Peckham, and several vocal items were rendered, Brother A. Jackson officiating at the piano. Visitors during the evening included about twenty members of the Queen of Oak Lodge (ladies) and several brothers from kindred lodges. WOOLSTON LAWN TENNIS CLUB. The Woolston Lawn Tennis Club reports a very successful season. The membership increased considerably, while the standard of play, particularly among the younger members, had greatly improved. Members freely entered in all Suburban competitions held at Wilding Park during the season, and won a number of events. The club’s men’s championship singles was won by J. W. Arnold for the second year in succession, with W. Hawkins runner-up. The finalists for the ladies’ singles championship were Mrs A. B. L. Smith and Miss Dryden. Excellent work had been done by the entertainment committee during the year under the leadership of Mr J. Cadenhead. The committee had arranged for the filling in of the club's front section, which was now a valuable asset and suitable for the laying of more courts.
