BAND-ROOM. The ijew band-room of the Municipal was officially opened by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr F D. Muirson) on Wednesday evening. Afterwards a social was held in Joyland, at which it was announced that the band had been granted leave to hold a three days’ open air bazaar and fete on the beach at Christmas, in aid of funds for uniforms and contest expenses. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the New Brighton Plunket Society was held on Wednesday afternoon. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., presided. Matron Gillespie, of Karitane Hospital, spoke on “Mothercraft,” and Nurse Wilson gave an address on “Home Life.” The balancesheet showed a credit balance of £76 13s 6d. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs N. M’Gillivray; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. H. Shaw, S. Grammer, and W. Dean; committee, Mesdames W. H. Flavell, L. Lawrence, R. Pearson, H. Throp and J. M’Donald: honorary secretary and treasurer. Miss E. Hulme: assistant secretary, Mrs G. Bielby; advisory board, Messrs J. H. Shaw, W. Dean. W. M’Gillivray, R. S. Pearson, W. Barnett and Dr Glasgow SOUTH BRIGHTON PROGRESS LEAGUE An interesting address on the tunnel road scheme was given by Mr H. M Chrystall to the members of the South Brighton Progress League on Tuesday evening. The proposed Shag Rock bridge in relation to the scheme was touched on by the speaker, who thought it or a ferry quite possible. BRANCH OF THE SEAMEN’S GUILD. A most enjoyable dance was held at the Masonic Hall, New Brighton, organised by the members of the local Ladies’ Branch of the Seamen’s Guild. Seymour’s Orchestra provided the music, and several novelties were introduced. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Johnson and Mr Schneidemann, and the Lucky Spot waltz by Mr and Mrs Hubert. Those present included Mr and Mrs M’Cree, Mr and Mrs Queree, Mr and Mrs Whiteley,. Mr and Mrs Hubert, Mr and Mrs Russell, Mr and Mrs Chi vers, Mesdames Bishop, Hooker, MTntyre, Cooper. Chisnall, Bergh, Barnett and F. Mitchell, pisses Bishop (2), Barnett, Nelson, Smith, Irene Tillyshort, Daphne Hooker, Alice Moses, Rita Bultitude, Betty BergH, Messervey, Scott, Johnson and Rosie Schneidemann; Messrs,. Burtenshaw (Wellington), Sneidemann, Gould, Middleton, Boon, Moffatt (Nelson), Bishop, Whiteley and Rennie. The monthly meeting of the Guild was held ‘at the residence of Mrs 11. Bishop. The missioner’s report showed that good work was still being done at the institute. At the request of several persons who had attended the previous dances, it was decided that another dance should be held next month. A boc.k and coin afternoon will be held next month. CARD EVENINGS. Mr and Mrs A. M. Chivers gave a successful novelty whist drive and dance for the New Brighton Bowling Club in the Oasis on Tuesday evening The successful card winners were Mrs Christie, Mrs Bisman, Mrs Munro, Mr Arden, Mr Watson, and Mr W. Cook. A flag five hundred evening was given by Mr and Mrs F. Ward, Lonsdale Street, New Brighton, to augment the funds of the New Brighton Croquet Club. Prizes were won by Mesdames B. Smith, T. Cooke, W. Whiteley, J. Spedding and Messrs F. Blunt and G. Palk.

NORTH BEACH NOTES. SURF CLUB. The executive of the North Beach Surf Bathing and Life Saving Club met in the paviliqn on Thursday evening. Present:—Messrs A. Brand (chairman), G. Dew (secretary), E. H. Barker, J. E. Bobby, R. Snell and F. J. Lawrence Scott. The secretary reported that all the books belonging to the club were now in his possession and that the new lease of the site on the foreshore occupied by the club had been duly completed. The financial position of the club had improved, the overdraft having been reduced by £SO. It was decided to recommend the appointment of Mr W. F. M. Buckley as a life member of the club. Messrs Riordan and Dew were appointed a sub-committee to go into the question of a new club costume. SCHOOL FOOTBALL. In the sixth round of the Public School competition the North Beach team was beaten by the Cashmere Hills by 9 to nil. Stewart Freeborn for North Beach played an exceptionally good game. PERSONALS. Mr W. Lawrence Scott, C.1.E., 1.C.5., Commissioner of Taxes, Shillong, Assam India, brother of Mr F. J. Lawrence Scott, of Jubilee Avenue, is on a visit to his relatives. Mr and Mrs H. Philpott, of Fleming Street, after several years’ residence at North Beach, have removed to the city. PRESENTATIONS TO MR AND MRS JUDKINS. The Memorial Hall, North Beach, was well filled on Thursday when a farewell social was tendered to Mr and Mrs W. E. Judkins. Mr Judkins, who has been headmaster of the North Beach School for several years, is leaving to take up the position of headmaster of the Oamaru North School. The evening was spent in games and dances, interspersed with items. Mr H. Instone gave a humorous recitation, Miss Francis Burley played a pianoforte solo, and the scholars of Standard V and Standard VI gave two folk dances. Mr A. Florance (chairman of the School Committee) speaking on behalf of the residents of North Beach, wished Mr and Mrs Judkins prosperity and happiness in their new home, Mr A. Diehl, first assistant master of the school, also spoke, and Mr Freeborn, on behalf of the residents of North Beach, presented Mr Judkins with a case of cutlery. Mr Judkins, in responding, thanked the residents for their gift. He expressed his appreciation of the assistance he had received from the several committees with which he had worked and stated that a very happy relationship had always existed between himself, the committee and the parents of the school children. The arrangements for the evening were in the capable hands of Mr and Mrs A. Florance, Mr and Mrs Mahan, Mr and Mrs Freeborn, Mr and Mrs Nome, Mr and Mrs "Bussell, Miss Griffiths, Messrs Diehl, Manson, Henry and Uren Music for the dancing was provided by Eyre’s Dance Orchestra.
