SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

SURPRISE PARTY. In spite of the cold weather last evening, a large number of Christchurch and country people visited the home of Mr and Mrs Denis Chapman, “The Ranch,” Wesit Eyreton, as a surprise party. The spacious drawingropm, with its bowls of autumn leaves, Christmas roses and -violets, and large, log fire, gave a cheerful welcome to the visitors who had' driven from distant homes. Mrs Chapman received the guests, wearing a charming ninon frock patterned in green and rose, and a coatee of metallic tissue with collar and cuffs of fur. Spencer-Bower, Robin Chapman. Canterbury Caledonian Society. The fortnightly social of the Canterbury Caledonian Society was held on Wednesday evening at the Caledonian Hall, and despite the unfavourable weather, it was Well attended by members and friends. The president/ Mr C. S. Thomas, occupied the chair, and was supported by Mr Geo. Sey, vice-presi-dent, and Mr A. M’Duff, director. The programme for the evening w T as arranged by Messrs G. Sey and A. M’Duff. Two new members were elected during the evening, and the following items contributed to the programme: Selections by the Society’s Pipe Band; song, Mrs Wood; instrumental trio, Misses Rennie; Highland fling, Miss M. Sey.; song, Miss Richardson; concertina selection, Mr E. W. Heald; recitation, Mr Drysdale; sword dance, Miss M Neate; piping selection, Piper Morrison; song, Mr B. Riddock; seajin triubhais, Miss R. Peteison; song, Mr L. Campbell; Irish reel, Misses M. Neate, M Pyke, J. Yardley and R. Peterson. Accompanists for the evening were Mr G. C. Russell and Miss Rennie. Mr E. Jackson’s Orchestra supplied the music for the dance which followed. Social and Dance. Old friends met again when past students of the West Christchurch District High School held a social and dance in the Orange Hall on Thursday evening to celebrate the revival of both the Old Girls’ and Old Boys’ Associations. There was a good attendance of members of both associations and in view of the enthusiasm shown it was decided that further functions of a similar nature should be held at intervals during the year. A dainty supper was served and items were .given by Misses Avril Glanville, Romola Bunt, and J6an Yardley. It was a very enjoyable evening for all present, and there were many expressions of regret when the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought proceedings to a close. Scottish Society’s Concert. The Scottish Society held its monthly Ceilidh <j>n Thursday evening in the Manchester Street hall before a large audience. Chief A. A. M’Lachlan presided and referred in' feeling terms to the illness of Mr Calder and to the loss of the late Mr Walls, a life member of the society, for whom a lament was played on the pipes by the Pipe-Major, Mr Patterson. Those responsible for the good programme were Chieftains Gordon and Wills. Items were contributed as foHows: ' Selections, Society's pipe band; reel, Misses E. Walker, Madge Walton, Joyce Neil and Ziska Zander; songs, “ ’Twa Bonnie Blue E'en,” a Fairy Love Song and Daelic songs, Mrs Whitehead; sean truibhais, Miss Mavis Neate; songs, “The Wee Hoose ’Mang the Heather,” . “ Bell of the Sj.ea,” “ The Shores of Loch Lomond,” “ The End of the Road,” and “ The Sailor’s Paradise,” Mr Caithness ; songs, “ Cornin’ Thro’ the Rye,” “ Spreading the News,” Miss Miretta Shier; flings, Misses Neil and Ziska Zander, Miss Morton and Master Morton; hornpipe and Irish Jig, Miss Joan Sutherland; songs, “Hail Caledonia,” “ I Did Not Know,” and “ Away in Athlone/” Mr Toome}*-. The entertainment finished with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne ” and a few dances. ' Bridge Party. Mrs G. T. Lucas, Opawa, gave a novel bridge party at her home last night. The guests on their arrival were given masks to wear and a jig-saw puzzle to solve in order to find their partners. Bowls of foliage *and spring flowers were tastefully arranged in the drawingroom. Among the guests were: Mesdames T. MiUiken, A. C. Cavell, G. Baxter, F. Egan, 11. Parsonson, R. A. Campbell, Fred Bowron, Vernon Matthews, S. Wright and Misses L. Baxter, Edith Bowron and Frances and Jessie Laurenson. Bridge Evening. The members of the Sumner Croquet Club held a flag five hundred and bridge evening on Thursday at the residence of the president, Miss M. A. Bain, Head Street. Those present included: Mr and Mrs J. A. Clarke, Mr and Mrs A. Graham, Mr and Mrs T. Gough, Mr and Mrs L. P. Longuet, Mr and Mrs tV. 11. Brown, Mesdames Thomson, Gorton, Henderson, Reid, E. A. Johnson, Gale, Barlow, Climie, Menzies, C.» L. Allen, M. Smith, Cheshire, Claydon, Misses C. Andrews, Wilson, Ellis, R. Bain, Overton, D. and M. Wood, Dr Gossett. Coming of Age Party. A surprise party visited the home of Mr and Mrs F. C. H. Williams, North Avon Road, Shirley, recently, to celebrate the coming of age of their eldest son, Basil. Games, competitions and dancing were enjoyed during the evening. The prize winners were Miss Rita Hart and Miss Alice White. Gift Evening. An enjoyable evening was held in the Omihi Hall recently in honour of Miss Jr Love, v;ho is to be married shortly. A programme of games, competitions and music was arranged by Misses E. Roscoe and E. Dobson. The musical items were given by Mrs E. Foster, Misses Roscoe, Dobson and two little tots, Natalie Bryden and AJda M’Xally, the accompaniments being played by Mrs L. Doak. Opportunity was taken by the members of the Presbyterian Church, for which Miss Love has been organist for many years, to present her with a pair of vases, and also by the members of the Bible Class, with a crystal jug and glasses. Supper handed rotmd by the ladies brought a splendid evening to a close. Pareora Bachelors and Spinsters’ Annual Ball. On Friday e vening, June 13, the'

Pareora Hall was filled to capacity on the occasion of the spinsters and bachelors annual ball. Red, blue and gold streamers, combined with coloured balloons and greenery, made a gay setting fqr the many pretty frocks. The music was supplied by Sinclair’s orchestra, while the duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr H. Edwards.
