UNEMPLOYED CAN BE USED TO BREAK IN LAND
GOVERNMENT PURCHASE EXPLAINED BY MINISTER. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, .me 27. In reply to a member’s question during his speech in the'House of Representatives to-night, the Hon E. A. Ran som. Minister of Lands, stated that the cost of the area of 3000 acres recently bought by the Government near Porau o Taroa, near Te Kuiti, was about £2 an acre. Several committees were at work in various parts of the Dominion reporting on lands suitable for developmental operations, and he was convinced that under this heading much relief could be given to the unemployed in breaking in that parti cular class of land. Work should not be started until inquiries were carefully made into the future success of those undertakings. The Government
could take some risk in paying satisfactory wages for development and placing settlers on land on a fair capital basis, and he believed that the House and the country would be willing to agree to some writing off of values if it meant providing work for the unemployed.
