ITEMS FROM VARIOUS DISTRICTS. (Special to the “ Star.”) HORNBY. Mr O’Flynn, head teacher at the Hornby School, is at present on holiday in the North Island. Mr Ilanmer Smith, Otira, who has been spending part of his vacation with Mr W. P. Nolan, has returned home. HORORATA Mr T. Hight occupied the chair at a meeting of the committee of the spinsters and bachelors. It was decided to hold the annual ball on June 13, not on the third Friday as previously reported It was resolved to procure Wells’s Band from Christchurch to supply the music for the function. Messrs J. Payne and B. Milne left by motor-car on Monday morning for Kaikoura, where they will spend a fortnight’s holiday. Mrs S. F. Barrett leaves for Kaikoura to-day. for a short holiday. Miss Joan Barrett is visiting Mayfield. Miss D. Barrett is staying with her grandmother, Mrs Little, Ashburton. Miss Boyle, Opawa, is spending the term holidays with Mr and Mrs Adams, “ Fair view.” LEITHFIELD. At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Leithfield Lodge, Brother J Demmocks presided over a fair attendance. The agreement between Dr Fossey and the lodge was approved. A letter was received from the Amberley Lodge regarding Dr Thompson's cup, and it was agreed that a meeting of the delegates be called to meet the Amberley Lodge at their next meeting. P.D.G.M. Brother Gardiner, delegate to the B.M.C. meeting, visited the lodge and gave a report of the proceedings. The nominations of officers for various chairs were the largest for a number of years. At the annual meeting of the Leithfield Domain Board Mr H. May was elected chairman and Mr J. W. Sarich was re-elected honorary secretary. It was decided to purchase and plant trees on the beach frontage, Mr Gordon Fulton to select ornamental trees for the interior of the domain. The road is to be formed towards the pump. WAIAU. The annual general meeting of the Waiau branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Presbyterian Sunday School, Waiau. Mrs H. Dampier-Cross-ley presided over a good attendance. The annual report and balance-sheet showed the branch to have a credit balance of £62 14s lOd. The last spring flower show held in conjunction with the branch had proved such a success that it was decided to hold one again next year. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs H. Dampier-Crossley; vicepresidents, Mesdames D. Rutherford, E P. H. Burbury, P. Morse, P. R. Dearden, D. C. Macfarlane and W. Anderson; secretary, Miss M. Anderson; treasurer, Mrs G. W. Aldridge; committee, Mesdames F. C. Forbes, P. R. Dunbar, W. D. Banks, P. R. Dearden, D. C. Macfarlane and R. A. Chaffey. A vote of thanks was passed to all officials and workers during the past year. SPRINGSTON SOUTH. A social was held at Springston South recently in aid of hall funds. A competition was won by Mrs N. E. Durey and Mr C. Mills. Music for the dance was provided by Mr J. Hutchison. Springston South experienced a wel come rain at the latter part of last week. Duck shooters were astir early on Friday morning, this being the first south-wester since the opening of the season, and some fair bags were procured that day. WOODEND. In a junior Rugby football match at Woodend on Saturday, the home team were beaten by Amberley, the score being 12 points to nil. The senior team had a bye. Woodend players suffered defeat ■when playing Sefton at Woodend on Saturday, the scores being:— Sefton 9, Woodend 4. The sum of £652 6s 4d is now in hand, according to a report presented at St Barnabas’s parishioners’ meeting in the Woodend Ilall on Monday evening, towards the building of the proposed new church. A rough sketch plan of the projected building was submitted to an attendance of thirty parishioners. It w T as decided that consideration of actual details of building be deferred for the present. It was further reported that, by means of special efforts during the year, the debt on the Sunday school had been liquidated. Thanks to the workers in this connection and to all church workers were tendered by the vicar, the Rev E. Chard. The Sunday school building is to have an addition in the shape of a porch at the back entrance, which at present is somewhat exposed to the weather, and it was also decided to improve the lighting of the footpath leading up to the church. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Vicar’s warden, Mr R. Macdonald; people’s warden, Mr H. Gillman (both re-elected); vestry, Messrs King, L. J. Stokes, J. Henshaw. S. Stokes and J. Wesley; central vestry, the churchwardens and Mr L. J. Stokes.

SPRINGFIELD. The weather at Springfield has been cold and showery. The fortnightly social evenings held in the hall are well patronised, and the school funds will benefit considerably. Mr R. Innes, who returned on Saturday from the West Coast, was made the recipient of a presentation from the members of the Grey Valley Collie Club For the first time for nearly fifty years, the Salvation Army held a meeting on the Triangle on Sunday afternoon. The Springfield footballers were again successful in their match against Ilororata, winning by 18 points to nil. They have now scored 87 points, with 6 points scored against them. The hockey team were also successful by four goals to nil against the Hororata team. Miss Lapthorne has returned to Christchurch. Mrs Ryan is on a holiday visit to Auckland. Mrs C. Pearson is on a visit to " Baldoon,” Russell’s Flat.
