RANGIORA BOROUGH MATTERS DISCUSSED.

The Rangiora Borough Council met last evening, those present being—The Mayor (Mr C. S. Ayers) and Councillors R. 11. Bailey, R. R. Gillanders, W. Horrell, H. K. Kjppenberger, J. Lindon. F. E. Martyn, C. W. Tyler and W. C. Wilson. The local branch of the Workers’ Educational Association wrote applying for a grant. The application was referred to the Finance Committee. , The Sinking Fund Commissioners forwarded their yearly account, which showed a net return of £G 2s per cent. The Finance Committee recommended that the council’s insurance be placed with the same companies as last year; that the council’s tenant, Mr Molloy, be paid £75 towards improvements on the reserve at Lyndhurst; that the application of Mr F. Fennell for a. revaluation of his land for rating purposes bp approved; and that accounts amounting to £5208 ISs 7d be passed for payment. The recommendations were adopted. The Mayor and Councillor Bailey were authorised to meet the chairman and clerk of the County Council regarding sewerage works. It was decided to ask the police to co-operate with the traffic inspector in an attempt to abate the nuisance of noisy motor-cycles. It was left to the Town Clerk to make the best arrangements possible for carrying on the sanitary contract. It was decided to close the rubbish dump on the river-bed as soon as arrangements could be made with the River Trust for a new site. The caretaker of the hall was authorised to get temporary help neteded for cleaning the hall. It was reported that the County Council had withdrawn its objection to the proposal of the borough engineer to lay a sewer in a portion of the county road, at the East Belt and Northbrook Road. The following recommendations of the Works Committee wen© adopted:—That a trial be made with Coldflx emulsified bitumen; that application be made to the Highways Board to declare Percival Street a secondary highway; that the levels of King Street North be taken, with a view to scarifying, rolling and tar-sealing; and that Mr Anderson, the council’s tenant at Lyndhurst, be supplied with any trees required for planting on the borough reserve. The Town Clerk submitted his yearly statement of accounts. The profit and loss accounts of the council’s trading concerns showed an increased volume of business, and general improvement all round. The clerk stated, with regard to sanitation matters, that during the period Mr A. Howard had the sanitation contract the work had been carried put in an excellent manner, there being very few complaints. A recommendation by the clerk that two of the men who had been temployed by Mr Howard be allowed to take on the contract was agreed to. Councillor Tyler reported that a meeting of representatives of local bodies in the northern district was held that morning at the County Council Office in connection with the proposal to appoint a motor traffic inspector in the district. It was stated that the cost would be about £6OO a year, the Main Highways Board to provide £3OO and the local bodies interested the balance. The borough’s portion would be about £4l.
