On a charge of driving a motor-lorry in St Asaph Street whila in a state of intoxication, Alfred Wicks, a carrier, was fined £lO and costs, in default ofie month’s imprisonment, by Mr E. D Mosley, S.M., to-day. On a further charge of driving a lorry not equipped with brakes complying with the regulations, Wicks was convicted and discharged. Sub-inspector Shanahan said that, ip response to a complaint at 4.15 p.m. yesterday, Constable Thompson and Traf-fic-Inspector Benje went to St Asaph Street and found the defendant intoxicated. Prior to their arrival, Wicks had backed his lorry into someone else’s lorry, doing a certain amount of damage. Driving the lorry to the station, the constable found that the foot-brake was no good, and that the hand brake was no better.

Wicks said that things in the carrjdng line were very quiet and he was living from hand to mouth. He did not have the ready money to buy n6w brake linixgs and he could not get credit. Mr Mosley: And you go and make it worse by getting drunk.

Defendant: I didn’t altogether get drunk. Mr Mosley: You’re only recovering from it now, man!

Defendant: I did not get any sleep last night. To the Magistrate’s remark that defendant would probably lose his license, Wicks replied that he did not want that to happen. Fourteen days were allowed in which to pay the fine of £lO and costs.
