Although there was a marked absence of hot weather during March, conditions in the Mount Somers district generally were favourable for the safe ingathering of the harvest. Cool dry easterly conditions, with heavy dews and frequent frosts at night, were experienced, the rainfall being much below the average. The cool conditions mitiliated against the fattening of stock, and many of the turnip crops are poor as a result of the dry conditions. Rain fell on nine days, 1.79 in being recorded, compared with 3.63 in for the corresponding period last year. A maximum fall of .47in was recorded on March 21. The rainfall for the first three months of the current year totals 14.86 in, compared with 6.B2irj for the same period last year. Frosts were registered on eleven mornings, with a maximum of 6 degrees on March 26, 27 and 31. Mr and Mrs 11. N. Armstrong, who have disposed of their property in the Buccleugh Settlement, leave this week to reside at Ashburton. During their residence in the district, both Mr and Mrs Armstrong took a prominent part in public activities, especially in church and educational work, and their loss is regretted. Mr Armstrong was also a J.P. In view of the formation of a football club, and the refusal of the Domain Board to permit Sunday games, the Men’s Hockey Club has decided to disband, and return all money received to the donors. Beyond expressing disappointment, officials of the tennis club have no comment to make on the Domains Board’s decision regarding Sunday tennis. A frost of 6 degrees was registered yesterday morning.
