BANKRUPTCY RETURNS ' SHOW SLIGHT INCREASE. Th* bankruptcy returns for South Canterbury for the quarter ended March 31, 1930, show that bankruptcies on hand at the beginning of the quarter were 34, and fresh bankruptcies, nine, against two fresh bankruptcies for the same period last year. The total amount of assets realised was £1244 19s Id, as against £192 4s in 1929. while last quarter £799 15s 2d was paid in dividends, as against £244 16s 2d in 1929. Three petitions in bankruptcy ■were filed at Timaru during March, against two for the corresponding month last year. PETROL AND TYRE TAX. The amount collected by the Customs officials at Timaru last month in tyre tax was £72 7s, compared with £l6O 4s in March last year. The total tax amounted to £785 15s, compared with £1383 11s Bd. The drop in the figures does not indicate any slump, as the amount of tax depends on the number of overseas boats, carrying the commodities mentioned, touching at Timaru. WORK ON COUNTY BRIDGES. The County Engineer, Mr Thomas Black, reported yesterday that the timber for Days and Sutherlands Bridges would come to hand in a month’s time, but as - the contractor for the work was erecting a bridge in the Maniotcto County it might be some time before he could proceed with the work. The contractors had not yet commenced dismantling the old Pareora Bridge, but, weather permitting, they proposed to start in about nine or ten days’ time. AN ALLEGED NUISANCE. According to the district health inspector, a serious nuisance has been created at Coonor Road. Timaru, by a boiling-down works, where fish offal and carcases of animals are exposed to the sun. . The Levels County Council has served notice on the owner to close the works. OBSTETRICAL APPEAL. The Levels County Council has voted £2O to the South Canterbury Obstetrical Appeal Committee. This brings the amount subscribed to date to £649 TIMARU-TEMUKA ROAD. The Levels County Council has been advised that the chairman of the Main Highways Board desires that a close watch be kept on the condition of the Timaru-Temuka Road. The council’s attention has been drawn to the necessity for regular maintenance, ani it is also desired that the council ex-fcedite the preparation of the necessary plans for the reconstruction of this »ection of the road in connection with the council’s proposed paving scheme. UNEMPLOYED RELIEF WORK. Reporting to the Levels County Council on work for unemployed relief, Mr Thomas Black, County Engineer, stated that owing to stress of work he had not been able to go fully into this matter. It was rather difficult to find works where most of the expenditure would be for labour. The following suggestions would be worth considering:—(l) Deviating and regrading Fox’s Cutting on road between Rosewill School and P. Porter’s. (2) Deviating and constructing new road through Mr T. Rhodes’s property. Hill from Hadlow woolched to Hadlow Road. (3) Alignment of road to ease gradient Howden’s Cutting, on Rockwood Road. (4) Widening and regrading on Brassell’s Road. (5) Protective work at O’Mara’s. Lower Opihi. Mr Black was asked to report further on the matter to the next meeting. BOROUGH EMPLOYEE’S DEATH. Walter Williams, a married man, of 12, Butler Street, died in the Timaru Public Hospital at 4.30 p.m. yesterday. Williams was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday last, after suffering Internal injuries caused by a wheel of a heavy council lorry which he was driving, passing over him. He was attending to the tip-gear of the vehicle when it moved, and the rear left-hand wheel passed over him. An operation was performed shortly after Williams’s admittance to the hospital, and it was found necessary to perform another operation yesterday. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. Mr <\ R. Orr Walker, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Timaru yesterday. Judgment by default, with costs, was given in the following undefended civil cases:—H. Webb v. A. Percy Newman. £1 Is; Amuri Motors, Ltd., v. W. S. Bower, costs only, 9s. POLICE OFFICER FAREWELLED. Sergeant Harley, clerk at the Timaru Police Station, who has been transferred to Hamilton, was farewelied by his fellow-officers yesterday. Inspector A. S. Bird wished Sergeant Harley every success, and made him a presentation of a copy of “Sarren on Crimes” and an attache case. Detective L. Studhclme, Sergeant Gilligan and Constable P. Swan also spoke. A HANDSOME DONATION. Miss Mac Lean, a former principal of the Timaru Girls’ High School, has written to the Jubilee Committee, intimating her intention of being present at the Easter celebrations, and enclosing a special donation of £IOO as an endowment to provide prizes for Scripture knowledge at the girls’ school. The committee have decided that, in addi tion to the official ribbon badge, pupils of each decade should wear a distin guishing ribbon attached. The colours decided cn were: —1880-1890, gold; 1891 1900, red; 1901-1910, green; 1911-1920 pink; 1921-1930, blue. LEVY ON FRIENDLY MATCHES. The South Canterbury Rugby Union has decided to take 10 per cent of the gross takings at friendly matches played on its grounds. PERSONAL. Mr D. Hertnon has been elected chairman of the Management Commit tee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union. Mr H. H. Fraser is now vicechairman. Catto (Dunedin). r .A. Kidd, Superintendent of the \Y aipiata Sanatorium, is at present in Timaru. ORARI. In connection with the deputation that waited on the Hon G. W. Forbes acting-Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, on Thursday last concerning the erosion by the Orari River, Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., has received the following telegram from the Hon E. A

Rarfsom, Minister of Public Works:— * 4 The Hon G. W. Forbes has communicated with me regarding the Orari River erosion, and I have instructed the District Engineer to investigate the position immediately and to report direct to me. I will advise you further on the matter as early as possible.” In the children’s section at the Winchester Show% two Orari girls were successful in obtaining most points in their respective sections. In the children (under sixteen) section, Greta Aker won Mr T. D. Burnett’s prize and the “ Temuka Leader ” prize, while in the children (under fourteen) section, Gladys Watson was successful in winning the trophies donated in this section by Mr T. D. Burnett- and by the “ Temuka Leader.” Mrs Kiely, Waltham, Christchurch, is staying with Mrs W. Quirke Orari. Mrs J. B. Cone, Orari, is spending a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs Goss, at Tinwald. Miss E. Stone-Wigg Wellington, is the guest of Mrs Stone-Wigg Waihi College. GERALDINE. The annual meeting of the Geraldine Rugby Football Club was held on Tuesday night, when Mr J. Kennedy presided over a good attendance. The report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a small credit balance, w’ere adopted. Officers were elected as follows: —Patron, Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P.; president, Mr J. Kennedy; vice-presi-dents, Messrs Barrell, Jackson and Dr Mail, in addition to last year’s; secretary, Mr M. Hayes; treasurer, Mr Hatton ; committee, Messrs Lorimer, Morgan C. Withers, G. Loach, J. Chapman, W. Angland, D. M’Kechnie and C. Knight; delegate to Rugby Union, Mr A. Clements. The question of the number of teams to be entered for the South Canterbury competitions was considered at length and eventually it was decided to enter teams for the third and,fifth grade matches. Recommendations were made that a charge of sixpence be made for entrance to local matches; that a match, Town v. Country, be arranged, and that the opening of the season be left in the hands of the committee. The vital statistics for March were as follows:—Births 6, deaths 2, marriage 1. For the quarter they were: Births 17. deaths 3. marriages 4, while for the March quarter of 1929 they were; Births 15, deaths 7, and marriages 6. The Geraldine Collie Dog trials commence to-dav at Messrs Blair Brothers run. Peel Forest. The entries are good and the trials promise to be very interesting. Mr B. R. Macdonald, of “ Waitui, is on a visit to the north. The annual sale of work organised by the Ladies’ Association on behalf of the Presbyterian Church was held yesterday in the Presbyterian Hall and a large marquee adjacent thereto. The annual meeting for the election of a general committee for the Clandeboye Hall was to have been held oil Monday evening, but owing to the number of other meetings on the same date the meeting was postponed till this evening. The canvass for the Obstetrical Fund has been made in Clandeboye and already £5 18s 6d has been raised. Advice has been ‘ received that Miss A. M Stops, Dominion organiser for the Women’s Institutes, who has recently arrived from England, will be in South Canterbury this month. Arrangements will be made for her to address a meeting at Clandeboye. TEMUKA. Following are the vital statistics for the Temuka district for the month of March, 1930, the figures for the corresponding period in 1929 being given in parentheses:—Births 10 (5); deaths 1 (5); marriages 1 (5). For the March quarter, 1930. the figures are:—Births 21 (18» : deaths 6 (10); marriages 2 (7). Profiting by last year’s experience, the promoters of the children’s choir festival have made alterations in some of the arrangements. Each group is asked to provide one item for the second part of the programme. Nothing in connection with the festival is to be regarded as competitive; although, where desired, Mr Vernon Griffiths will give a written criticism. The children s team will be much more efficiently managed than last year. Provision is being made to cope with up to 300 children, the whole of the work being undertaken by a committee arranged by St Peter’s choir. Steps are being taken to handle more adequately the children at the theatre. Temporary staging will be erected to avoid the congestion which occurred on the stage last year. It is proposed to hold a preliminary practice in the Parish Hall, for the purpose of rehearsing the orchestra. Inspectors Haslam, Graham and Bates are in Temuka paying their usual visits to the schools in the district. Mrs J. Paterson (“Dennislea,” Peel Forest), who was attending the jubilee celebrations of the Temuka Presbyterian Church, was the guest of Mrs J. T. Brown.
