LEVELS COUNTY ROADS SUBJECT OF COMPLAINT.
A letter was received at yesterday’s meeting of the Levels County Council from Mr F. W. Furkert, chairman of the No. 15 District Highways Council, who, at the request of the chairman of the Main Highways Board, Mr F. W. Furkert asked the council to report on the following matters which had been brought to his notice by the South Canterbury Automobile Association:— (1) The difficulty of two cars passing on the Washdyke Traffic Bridge and the advisability of widening the same. (2) Improvements to the narrow corner on the first turn from Washdyke in towards Timaru on the north side of the Show Grounds, and also one on the south side of the Show Grounds. In regard to the latter there was a leaning telegraph post which made the corner dangerous. (3) The large amount of gravel aoolied at. Burness’s Hill on the soutli
side of Timaru. According to the . Automobile Association’s complaint : there was as much as a foot of loose shingle applied at a time. (4) Im- * provement of the bend just south of , the Pareora Bridge - . . The engineer (Mr T. Black) re- . ported that he had written to Mr Langbein suggesting that a culverted ford should be constructed in the Washdyke creek above the bridge, and if this were done one line of traffic could use the bridge and the other the ford. In regard to improving the corners, Mr Black pointed out that these were incorporated in the proposals shortly to be placed before the i Highways Board for paving the Main North Road. Improvement to Burness’s Hill also was part of the paving scheme. The bend on the south side of the Pareora River was under the control of the Waimate County Council.
