GALLANT SHIERS SAVED THE ’PLANE.
LAID ON FUSELAGE AND KEPT TAIL DOWN.
(United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received April 3, 11.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 3. The airmen, Messrs Dave Smith and 11. W. Shiers, accompanied by the 1 search party that found them, arrived in Wyndham yesterday, fit and well, but so tired that they fell asleep and the citizensl welcome had to be postponed. The story of their adventures shows that Shiers played an important part in the safe landing of the City of Sydney. After Smith had just lifted the ’plane over a hill and it was losing speed, Shiers crawled out of the cockpit and laid down on the fuselage to hold the tail down and so prevented it from nosing over. Smith stated that they had given up hope when found and had kept at the wireless key in sheer desperation. Mosquitoes and insects gave the airmen no peace. Smith’s father in Sydney received a message saying: “Thank God for wireless. We passed through an anxious period. We intend to effect repairs to the ’plane and then go on.”
