ATHLETICS.
PRELIMINARY EVENTS HELD BY VARSITY CLUB. The Canterbury University College Amateur Athletic Club conducted five events of its club championship programme at Lancaster Park last evening. The remainder of the programme will be decided on Saturday afternoon. A cold and strong easterly wind militated against fast times last evening, but the standard of performance was a good one, and the racing was keen and exciting. The best race was the final of the 220 yards title, in which R. O. F. King lost his title to J. H. Murphy. The race was an exciting one and resulted in a great finish between the three placed men. Murphy’s speed out of the holes gave him an early advantage, and he managed to hang on long enough to win by inches. King finished strongly, a yard ahead of Williams, with Harley further back. The time, 24 2-ssec, was slower than the times for the heats, but the wind was stronger during the running of the final. E. 33. E. Taylor scored a decisive win in the mile championship, finishing with a sustained sprint to defeat D. W. Bain by fifteen yards. The field was well beaten off. The time, 4min 35sec, was \ r ery fast under the conditions. O. C. Harley owed his defeat in the 440 yards hurdles to the fact that ho competed in too many events. In less than an hour he competed in four events, being unable to do himself Justice in any. The officials were:—Judges, Messrs R. Beattie, A. E. Flower and J. K. Moloney: timekeepers, Messrs G. G.
