POPPY DAY
To further arrangements in connection with the sale of poppies on Poppy Day, a well-attended meeting of ladies was held in the Jellicoe Hall yesterday. Mrs H. T. J. Thacker presided. It was announced that Mr H. G. Livingstone had given the use of his auction room as a central depot on Poppy Day. The various stands were allocated as follows:—Post Office, Mrs H. T. J. Thacker, Mrs J. C. Holmes and helpers; Barlow’s Corner, Women’s Christian Temperance Union; Clock Tower, Mrs J. K. Archer. Mrs Dunbie, and helpers; Tattersall’s, Mrs H. Fleck, Mrs Philpott, Miss Bayliss and Miss Fleck; Railway Station, Mrs Fitzgeorge and helpers; Bank of Australasia, Mrs P. R. Climie and helpers; Chancery Lane, Mrs E. F. L. Kesteven and helpers; Ballantyne’s Corner. Victoria League; Barnett’s Corner, Mrs Munroe and helpers; Cathedral Square, Navy League; Tram Shelter, Miss Grant; Cook and Ross's Corner and Armstrong’s Corner, Mrs Williams of the Selwyn Kindergarten Committee; Bank of New Zealand Corner, Sister M. M’Murtrie and Mrs J. Benzie; Woodwards Corner, Miss Hyatt, Mrs Bunz and helpers: Addington Saleyards, Mrs J. S Kelly and helpers; Triangle, Mrs Armstrong and helpers; Strange’s Corner, Mrs Sprosen and Mrs Royds; Beresford Corner, Miss Fryer and helpers; Headquarters, Mrs J. R. Evans, Mrs Carlisle and Miss Tabart. Other city stands will be allocated as the services of more helpers are obtained. Arrangements were made for afternoon tea to be provided for the helpers. It was reported that the Canterbury Advertising Club had undertaken the responsibility of advertising Poppy Day, and that the Shell Oil Co. had given the use of their motor lorries for which the company were providing placards. _ It was decided that as April 24 will be late night in town, to continue selling in the evening until the poppies are sold out.
