Mrs F. C. Harley and Miss A. Ham-, bledon are visiting the West Coast. Miss D. Satterthwaite is visiting Mr and Mrs T. Bowes, of Runanga. Mrs Kiely. Waltham, is staying with Mrs W. Quirk, at Orari. Miss Wright, who has been staying with Mrs G. Rhodes, at Beverley, returned to Timaru to-day. Mrs Frank Wilding is staying with Mrs W. T. Ritchie, Timaru, for the races. Mr and Mrs Morrison, Hambledon, Bealev Avenue, are * spending a fortnight on the West Coast. Mr and Mrs Alan Copeland arrived from Sydney this morning and are guests at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs A. W. Yarrall returned to Hokitika this morning after spending ten days in Christchurch. Mrs F. D. Ledger and Miss Ledger, Nelson, are staving at the Clarendon Hotel. The Hon J. M. Stopford, the late Home Secretary for Queensland, and Mrs Stopford, left for the south this morning. Mr Craig Gillies and Miss Betty Gillies, who were in town last week for the Polo Tournament, have returned to Mayfield. Miss Kiore King is producing three little plays at the Jellicoe Hall to-mor-row in connection with the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society. Mr and Mrs T. F. Gibson, Miss Nancy Gibson and Miss Diana Allen are leaving for England to-morrow, and will sail by the Niagara. Mr and Mrs R. Beveridge, Redcliffs, and Mr and Mrs Tracy Gough, Sumner, left on Monday night for Chateau Tongariro to attend the Rotorian conference. Miss K. Buckhurst, Cashel Street, who is leaving for England next week, was presented with a deck chair and cushion by her pupils and friends, after a little dinner party in her honour on Tuesday night. At a social evening at Mrs J. F. Studholme’s home in Ffcndalton, Miss Clowes, who is going to England shortly, was presented vrith two handsomely bound books as a‘token of appreciation of her services to the Girl Guides. About fifty Girl Guide captains were entertained. Mrs John Guthrie and Mrs Neil Guthrie were joint hostesses at an enjoyable # bridge party yesterday, in honour of Mrs John Stevenson, who is shortly leaving for Western Australia to stay with her son, Mr Kenneth Stevenson. The resignation of Miss I. Ireland, of the Christchurch office staff of the Lyt- , telton Harbour Board, on account of her approaching marriage, was received i by the board yesterday. In a motion of regret at losing her services, the board decided to grant Miss Ireland a month's leave on full pay. Her Excellency, Lady Bledisloe, has consented to be patroness of the Mothers’ Union in New Zealand. She will also attend the public meeting in the City Council Chambers next week in connection with the New Zealand obstetrical endowment appeal. Their Excellencies and staff will stay at Warner’s Hotel during their Christchurch visit. The reception-rooms of Mrs G. D. Greenwood's residence, Cranmer Square, were gay with flowers and sunlight yes-, terday, when a “book sale” was held in aid of the Plunket Society. Besides the books given by the hostess, Mrs Greenwood is grateful for help and donations from Mesdames Cecil Wood, W. Diamond, A. L. F. Ledger, Arthur Cook, Martin, Bennett, Frank Clark. George March, Hubert Henderson, Edwin Milnes, G. B. Morgan, Patton, Maxwell Ramsay, H. T. J. Thao ker and Richard Wallwork, Misses Cook and Mynette Watson, and Messrs Simpson and Williams, Ltd. Many purchasers came and went during the afternoon, and quite a number, after a dainty tea, had their teacups “read.” A very successful sale of books eventuated, and the society’s funds should benefit considerably.
