MECHANICAL ENGINEER RETIRES FROM RAILWAY.
(Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, April 3. Five years’ service as chief mechanical engineer to the New Zealand railways will be completed this month by Mr G. S. Lynde, who will relinquish his position with the department on April 15. The appointment of Mr Lynde was made in accordance with a recommendation by the Fay-Raven Railway Commission in 1924. Mr Lynde’s successor has not yet been announced. Since his arirval at Wellington from England on April 19, 1925, Mr Lynde has occupied the position of chief mechanical engineer. After being educated at Sedbergh, he served his apprenticeship in the locomotive shops of the Great Central Railways at Gorton, and in the carriage and wagon shops at Duckinfield. Several improvements in the direction of bringing the railways more into line with the systems in operation in other countries have been made during Mr Lynde’s term of office. The electric lighting of railway carriages, the inter-locking of points and signals, and a more recent device installed in carriages for stopping trains in cases of emergency are some of the improvements he has seen made.
