KAIKOURA NEWS.

OBITUARY. The death occurred on Friday of Robert Dennis Balfour at the residence of Mr W. BuTTen, “The Elms,” Kaikoura. Deceased, who was seventyseven years of age, and had lived in this district for fifty-six years. was born in Southampton, England, and came out to New Zealand in the sailing ship Margaret Balfour. of the Shaw, Savill line. Leaving the ship at Invercargill, he walked with his swag to Kaikoura, obtaining employment with the late Mr Bullen at Green Hills. Since then he was employed on the Bullen estates for a period of fiftyseven years. Deceased was employed with pack horses in the early days. Prior to his arrival here Mr Bullen lost quite, a number of pack horses, this loss , being avoided under Mr Balfour. Deceased was a sailor in early life, bis father being a member of the Royal Navy. He was educated at the Blue Coat School, London, and was unmarried. He never left the hills. He was of a quiet, retiring disposition. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon in the Church of England cemetery, the Rev W. W. Bed well officiating at the graveside. The death occurred recently in the Auckland Hospital of Ernest Lovell, son of the late Mr 11. Lovell, of Kaikoura, at the age of forty years. Deceased, who was born in Kaikoura. served his apprenticeship at his trade here, and at the age of twenty went to the North Island. He was on a farm at Dargaville until recently. He was a noted athlete and took a prominent part in trade cycling here. Mr Lovell’s wife predeceased him four years ago and he leaves two children. MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY. The erection of eighty tents for the accommodation of the men coming from Christchurch to commence the construction of the southern end of the line, is being attended to. The tents are being pitched at Coldstream, Parnassus. Quantities of timber, tents and miscellaneous gear have been transferred to the scene of operations from Soargill. Mr Langbein (Chief Engineer)' and Mr Baker (Inspecting Engineer), from Wellington, visited the locality during the week and expressed satisfaction with the lay-out and progress made. The engineers proceeded to Hundalee and inspected the work of widening and deviation being carried out under Mr A. Barker. At present sixty men are engaged clearing slips. ST PAUL’S SUNDAY SCHOOL. The annual picnic of the scholars of St Paul’s Sunday School was held on Saturday afternoon at Stony Creek, in ideal weather, transport being provided by Messrs W. Clemett and K. Flower. A series of races arranged by Mr E. Flower was put through with the following results: —Ten to twelve years, Dorothj r Knott: six to nine years, Stella Clemett; little girls, Nancy Knott: boys’ race, Leonard Yaxley and Jack Harris; small boys, Ivan Strahl and Russell Strahl; three-legged race. Jack Harris and Leo Monk; women's three-legged race, Miss A. Flower and Miss W. Sabiston. After tea the children were all presented with a bag of sweets and nuts. Cheers were given for Miss R. Gibson (superintendent) and Messrs E. Flower and W. Clemett for providing the necessary transport. CRICKET. A match was played at the Domain on Saturday between teams selected by Messrs W. Sabiston and A. Renner. Sabiston’s team, batting first, made 135 runs (S. O’Callaghan 25, E. Warner 52 retired, W. Sabiston 26, T. Drabble 11). The wickets were secured by Thomas and Edwards. Renner’s team made 161 runs (S. Mogridge 52 retired, G. Hobbs 10, G. Morris 19. A. Renner 55 retired), the wickets falling to the bowling of T. Drabble and S. O’Callaghan. Renner’s team secured a win on the first innings by 26 runs. Next Saturday’s match will be played against Blenheim, at Blenheim, it being a representative match, Kaikoura representing . South Marlborough. BOWLING. Bowling was continued on Saturday, with the following results:—Davidson, Howard, Tisdall 41. Bartlett, Knight, Walters, 5. Easteott and Washington, 25, Glenn and Murray 22. TROTTING CLUB. Excellent nominations were received for the meeting of the Trotting Club, to be held on the South Bay course on February 22, the figures being a record for the club. Transport and unloading of the horses from Parnassus is being specially attended to. Various minor alterations are being carried out to the buildings. PERSONAL. Dr L. Withers left on Friday on holiday. Dr Percy (Christchurch) is relieving Dr Withers. Miss Dartnall, matron of the hospital, left on Thursday on a visit to Australia. Sister Turner is acting as matron during Miss Dartnall's absence. Mrs H. Comer and family have returned from Christchurch. The Rev Anderson Reilly (Seddon) conducted the service at St Paul’s Church on Sunday evening.

A social and dance, organised by the St Patrick’s Sports Committee, was held in the Suburban Hall on Friday evening, for the purpose of raising funds to provide a free luncheon to children of all denominations at the sports meeting to be held on March 15. There was a good attendance, music being supplied by the women of the committee. A further dance will be held next Friday in the Suburban Hall, the proceeds to be devoted to the sweets stalls. RAILWAY BOOKING OFFICE. Arrangements have been completed for a through booking information office with Mr Pat Curran. This should prove a boon to local residents, who originally had to make the necessary arrangements on arrival of the service cars at Parnassus. TENNIS. The Blenheim Anglican Tennis Club defeated Kaikoura by 202 games to 178.
