SELECTORS TO ATTEND CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 10. In view of the opinions expressed by representatives of governing bodies at a meeting in Wellington recently, from which it seems almost certain that a rowing team will be sent to Canada for the Empire Games, to be held at Hamilton, Ontario, in August next, the New Zealand Rowing Association is appointing provisional selectors to attend the championship regatta at Picton on February 15. All selectors will attend the eight-oar contest to be held at Auckland on March 22, where it is expected that five of the six provincial eights will compete.

CHESS CHAT. It is understood that the award for the brilliancy prize game in the New Zealand chess championship has been made by the adjudicators, but the announcement has not yet been made official. The president of the Melbourne Chess Club, Mr A. Burr, gave a dinner at the Langsham Cafe on Saturday. January 2r>, to welcome back the New Zealand champion, Mr G. Gundersen, who is als«* Victorian champion (states the “Leader”). The toast of the guest was proposed by the president, who spoke of the pleasure at Mr Gunderson's success in winning the Dominion championship and of the warm feeling towards him on the part of the club. He was carrying out the wishes of the club in arranging this home-coming. Mr L. V. Biggs (seconding) spoke of the personal qualities of Mr Gundersen, and of the great hospitality of Mr and Mrs Gundersen to visiting chess players and others Mr J. A. Pietzacker voiced the general feeling of the club, and Mi- A. Dali spoke of the help given by the champion to the younger chess players. iir Gundersen, replying, said the trip had been made most pleasant by the wonderful cordiality and kindness of New Zealand people, particularly those connected with chess in the several towns he visited. On arrival at Wellington lie welcomed by New Zealand chess officials, and after the congress manv of them came to say good-bye. He was much affected by this kindly welcome home by the Melbourne Chess Club.
