THE FIRE BUGS.

To the Editor. Dear Sir, —In your correspondence columns of last night’s “Star” I noticed, as perhaps did many others, two articles touching on a subject of widespread interest. It concerns the sequel to the arrest of the “Fire-bugs.” I was more than surprised to have my fears verified when “Pax C.S.” stated that “Dame Rumour has it that a second party is to claim the reward at an opportune time.” I think, if this is the truth, that such a thing is not only most unsportsmanlike, but also most unfair. It be a gross injustice for anyone t.o lay claim to what rightly belongs to none other than P.C. 106. He alone it is that should get the reward. If that second party had any hand in the initial arrest of the two young men, then they could legitimately put forward a claim. But, otherwise No! Who was it that cleared Christchurch of one of the worst crime-waves it has known? Who was it that made it possible for all the large business-houses to withdraw their nightwatchmen ? Who was it that cleared the way so that evefv citizen of Christchurch could spend a peaceful Christmas? It was Constable Gillum. So let the business people and public in general show their gratitude to him by seeing that he gets all he deserves, and that there must be no wrongful usurpation of his sole right to the offered reward —I am, etc. FAIR PLAY.
