The only ones to come now are those who went to Reeflon for the conclusion of the West Coast circuit. In the meantime, the tourists are not doing a great deal of work, but they will be moving along again shortly, as many of them are booked for a trip to Trentham next week. * * * * P. V. Mason arrived back from Auck ! land this morning with Honour, Praise, Greenaway and Jaleux. The three last- ■ v named returned in good health. Honour, however, showed distinct signs of lameness, and on his appearance he is not likely to be racing again for a long time. * * * * T. H. Gillett returned home this morning with Count Cavour and Amor, who are in excellent health after their Auckland trip. J. H. Prosser arrived home this morning with Great Star, who looks none the worse for his racing in Auckland. -i- -IW. Stone has gone north with the two-year-olds, Tray Bond and the Shambles —Leading Ladv filly. They will join the remainder of the team at Trentham, to race at the Wellington Racing meeting. Paquito was knocked about in the Auckland Cup, and he was unable to run again at the meeting. He lightened up a lot on the trip, but otherwise he is all right, and if he picks up quickly he may be a competitor at Trentham. * * * * Httrly Burly lightened up as s result of her' holiday racing in the North | Island, and she is having a rest for a few’ days. * * * * Subdivision, who raced unsuccessfully at southern holiday meetings, is enjoying a few days rest before being got ready for autumn racing * * * * E. Scoullar has received four additions to his team—two of them being two-vear-olds and two yearling?. They will be got readv to carry the colours of their breeder. Mr W. T. Hazlett. the well-known Invercargill owner. »}:*** Mr C. G. Dalgety has changed his mind about racing Starshooter at Trentham, and the Archery gelding will not be seen out again till a little later.

Otago and Southland stables claim Assemble, Blue Metal, Latin Quarter, Lucky Light, King Balboa, Royal Saxon, Jack a Dandy, Meadow Lark, Mount Boa and Commenter among the nominations for the Wellington meeting. * * * *

A. M’Aulay, the trainer of Nightmarch, has purchased, through the agenev of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., the two-year-old chestnut gelding by Nightraid from Killiney, from the breeder, Mr O. R. Wise, of Oamaru. The gelding is exceptionally -well-grown and in many ways resembles Phar Lap. His breeding has much to attract favourable notice, as his dam, Killiney, by the good sire of stayers, Kilbroney, is a half-sister to Charieville, the dam of Windbag, winner of the Melbourne Cup and many other great races in Australia.

The Dunedin Jockey Club is expected to show a nice profit on its summer meeting. For some seasons it has faced a substantial loss on the spring fixture, and rather unsatisfactory results in December. This season the debit on these two meetings has been converted into a credit, and the position is about £3OOO better than it was last season. During the last twelve months the club has reduced its indebtedness by nearly £6OOO. The changed outlook is indicated by the fact that, whereas a year or two ago very many of its debenture holders were anxious to redeem their scrip, now the club cannot find enough of them willing to take the cash.

FI. Gray’s right'arm was not of much use to him right through the Ellerslie meeting. He carried his whip in his left hand throughout, and it was noticed that when unsaddling his left hand did all the work.

Seatown looked light and jaded on the concluding day at Ellerslie, and raced moderately. The strenuous racing and travelling no doubt had found him out. His name is missing from the nominations for the Wellington meeting, so presumably he is to have a spell. *

Hunting Cry won £3440 at the Auckland meeting. Concentrate was next with £2200.

Knightlike was the only one of J. H. Jefferd’s team to win a race at Auckland, but between them they collected £IS2O in prize money, thanks to good place money earned by Star Stranger and Cylinder.

That it pays to have a good hurdler is shown by Mr R. Hannon collecting £1215 at Auckland, all of which, bar a minor placing, was won by King’s Guard.

M. J. Carroll, the trainer of Paganelli, had charge of Seatown for the few days he was at Awapuni. lie stated after the race for the Marawatu Cup that he has a singular record with other people’s horses, for every horse he has saddled up for another trainer has won. Trainers who are experiencing a lean time might call on the genial northerner to break the spell.

The veteran trainer, F. Tilley, who presides over the Fordell establishment from which he has turned out many winners, will retire at the end of this month to take a trip Home, sailing on March 1. During the past couple of months he has been letting the racing public of Wellington province see that his hand has not lost its cunning. At Awapuni he was rather unlucky, having only one winner (Ruanui), while representatives from the stable in Cashier, Ruanui, and High Faintin’ filled the roles of runners-up in other events, and Consent gained a third in his only start. It was at Marton that Tilley came into his own, for Enuitant notched a win and a second, Avro a third, Glenartney a second, Freehold a win and a second, Thrift a third, and High Falutin’ a brace of successes. Cashier was the only member <i_f the team to register an unplaced pe: formance.

An opportunity was taken while in Auckland of inspecting the new English stallion Whirlwind, who arrived in New Zealand late last season, and is represented by a few very likely looking foals, writes “ Vedette.” Whirlwind himself is an impressive individual, and given a chance, he should make a name for himself in New Zealand. A liver chestnut, showing plenty of size, bone, and quality, he looks the part of a progenitor of gallopers. Whirlwind, who is a six-year-old by Galloper Light from Double Back, was a winner in England as a four-year-old, scoring over a mile and a quarter at Hurst Park. It will be interesting to see how these first foals of Whirlwind’s fare when they are produced on the Turf. At the moment it must be said that there are worse-looking sires about than the son of Galloper Light.

Mr W. Jury, who purchased Fernden 1 last season, must be now well on the right side of the ledger so far as the Kedfern gelding is concerned (says the ‘‘Wanganui Chronicle”). Wins at Waverley and Hawera served as a forerunner to successes at Awapuni and Tauherenikau during the holiday carnival. On the second day of the Manawatu meeting Fernden went under to Statuarv in the hack sprint, but the following day he made amends when he led the field home in the open sprint, though the opposition was rather weak it must be admitted. Taken down to the Wairarapa meeting he was narrowly defeated by Chopin on the opening day after he had made the pace all the way, and on Thursday he was confidently supported to win the Russell Handicap. He performed his task in tradesmanlike style to return his supporters a dividend that gave them a nice little profit for the meeting. Fernden has won two open races within a week and, well placed, will win still more before the season ends.

A correspondent opens up an interesting point which was discussed at Awapuni, although it is emphasised that it is not suggested at all that there was any idea of wrong-doing, says the Wellington writer “Vedette.” This was in regard to the decision of the High Weight Handicap, in which Warzone, trained by Mrs A. M’Donald, just beat Democratic, ridden by A. M’Donald, husband of the trainer of Warzone. This opens up a delicate point, for which there is no provision in the rules, and gives the suspicious-minded an opportunity to criticise when there are no grounds. The regulations in regard to j cokeys who are trainers too state that the jockey must ride in a race the horse trained by himself, if he rides at all. It has to be admitted that lady trainers are a recent innovation in New Zealand, and it is a situation not likely to occur very often. At the same time, in order to silence the critics, it might be as well for some provision to be made to deal with the situation.

A cable message to Australian papers states that Mr Sol Green’s horse Strephon has been entered for the Coronation and Ascot Gold Cups, for which there are respectively 34 and 44 entries. The prospective meeting between Strephon and Lord Derby’s Fairway should prove one of the most interesting contests that has taken place on the English turf for many a day.

TROTTING NOTES,

The Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting will be held on Saturday. Good fields are engaged in most of the events, and the meeting is likely t attract strong patronage from Christchurch. A special train will leave Christchurch at 7.42 a.m., taking passengers to the course. The return journey will be commenced from Timaru at G. 33 p.m., and the train is due in Christchurch at 9.5 S p.m. ft * s}s

Mac Locanda, who won on the second day at Greymouth, is a brother to Locanda Mac, and is trained by F. G. Holmes. Early in his career he was a hard-pulling pacer, who used to fight so hard in races that he did not give of his best. F. G. Holmes has worked a great improvement in the Brent Locanda pacer, and he now races much more generously. lie is not, in the meantime, such a good stayer as Locanda Mac, but lias a useful turn of speed.

Kate Logan won a race at the last meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Club, but she has put up a number of placed performances this season. At the meeting at Greymouth which con-

eluded yesterday, she was again twice in the place money. Kate Logan is a speedy mare who, however, does not possess much stamina, but she may improve in this respect. She is trained by J. N. Clarke at New Brighton.

Great Way, who won the Dunollie Handicap at Greymouth, is one of the most promising young trotters now racing. lie dead-heated with Great Nelson in the three-year-old classic event for trotters at the Forbury Park club’s meeting last season. Great Way, who is by Peterwah, and Great Nelson, who is a brother to Peter Bingen and Great Bingen, are improving as four-year-olds, and promise to reach a high position amongst the trotting division.

Anon won the chief event at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting on the concluding day. She won the Templeton Handicap on New Year’s Day at Addington, putting up very fast time for the mile and a half. Anon is owned on the West Coast, but is a member of D. Withers’s team, being trained at Yaldhurst.

The Australian-bred pacer Black Wattle went into J. J. Kennerley’s stable on his arrival here, but when that trainer left for the north the pacer was handed over to J. R. Kennerlev, who trained him at Rangiora. Later J. R. Kennerlev removed to Christchurch, taking over his father’s place at Spreydon. Black Wattle raced consistently at the West Coast meetings, and yesterday, after finishing second to Anon in the Cup. wound up the day by beating a useful field in the sprint event.

Teremoa is evidently a useful saddle performer, as he won two races at the Greymouth club’s meeting. He was bred in the North Island, being by Huia Dillon from Calmness, and is trained by J. N. Clarke at New Brighton.

Royal Comrade won the chief event at the Westport Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day, but he was beaten by Black Wattle at Greymouth in one of the sprint events. Royal Comrade if he remains sound, will do better in stronger company later, as he is a fast pacer and a particularly smart beginner. He is in D. Bennett’s stable, and is trained at Addington.

* * * * Audience, who is a half-brother, by Great Audubon, to Loganwood, showed a lot of promise as a young pacer, but he has not improved as much as was expected. He seems to race best in saddle events over short courses. He was twice in a place at the Greymouth meeting.

An inquiry by the stewards of the Australian jockey Club into the running of the gelding Shankara at the Warwick Farm races on Saturday, when he was unplaced in the Sefton Handicap, resulted in the disqualification for twelve months of W.
