He was born at Mylnefield House, Great Amwell. Hearts. in 1863. He came to New Zea—land with his family when six years old. and was educated at Christ's College. After leaving the College he spent some years at Birch Hill, but station-life did not appeal to him, and he left New Zealand in 1893 to study art. The conditions of studio life, however, proved injurious to his health, and he was constrained to forgo his ambition. seeking consolation in the art galleries of the Old World, the majority of which were familiar to him. During the thirty years he spent thus, partly in England and partly abroad, he acquired a comprehensive and critical knowledge of paintings and statuary. He returned to Canterbury for a brief visit in 1897. The outbreak of the Great War caught him at Coblentz, where he narrowly escaped internment. He succeeded in boarding the last steamer that left the Rhine before the outbreak of hostilities. He made a final return to Canterbury a year ago, and his death will be much regretted by a wide circle of friends. ‘
