CROQUET PLAYERS FOR TOUR ARE SELECTED.

(Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, January 3. The New Zealand croquet test, which was held in Palmerston North to determine the personnel of the New Zealand team to tour Australia in January and February, resulted in the selection of:— A. G. F. Ross (Christchurch) Archdeacon Creed-Meredith (Wanganui) Mrs Cole (Auckland) Mrs E. A. Smith (Christchurch) Mrs B. Watkins (Hastings) Mrs B. Tiffen (Napier). The team, which may be considered" a good representative combination, left Wellington to-day by the Marama. Prior to the departure of the players, an official send-off was tendered by the Wellington Croquet Association, at which the Mayor of Wellington (Mr G. A Troup) presided. Mrs Cole, who is comparatively young in tournament play, played consistent and scientific croquet throughout the test, and well deserved her inclusion among the more experienced players. Ross, who is Dominion champion, easily topped the ’lst of wins, with sixteen successes matches. Archdeacon Creed-Meredith won thirteen games and lost five. Mrs Smith, Mrs Watkins, Mrs Cole and Mrs Tiffen all won twelve and lost six. The competition for the gold medaJ presented by Mr A. G. F. Ross, which was run in conjunction with the test is not yet decided. Archdeacon CreedMeredith and Mrs Cole are still in the running, and will probably play the deciding match while in Australia. The matches throughout the test were very even and keenly contested, and the standard of croquet played promises well for the success of the team against the Australians. WINS AND LOSSES.
