CAREER OF GENTLEMAN ADVENTURER ENDED. (United Press Assn.—-By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received January 3, 11.55 a.m.) VANCOUVER, January 2. Mr A. Erskine Smith, mining broker, soldier of fortune and gentleman adventurer in three continents, better kown as “ Coolgardie ” Smith, died on Wednesday. He earned his sobriquet on the Australian gold diggings. He won and lost half a dozen fortunes. He won the light-heavy-weight boxing championship at Johannesburg in the early ’nineties. He was a pioneer of the Klondike field, He was born in 1867 at Launceston, Tasmania, and was a companion adventurer of Frank Slavin and Frank Gotch.
