TRAINS COPE WITH HOLIDAY CROWDS.

GOODS TRAFFIC QUIET AT PRESENT TIME. The Railway Department is still working hard with the holiday passenger traffic which has proved heavier this year than last. The actual figures are not yet available but it is expected that they will reveal an increase in the number of passengers travelling. At present, the bulk of the goods traffic through the Otira tunnel is made up of motor-cars which are being freighted to and from the coast by holiday-makers on tour. Goods traffic generally is quiet, though it is expected that from Monday to the end of January large consignments of lamb will be trucked. The passenger traffic on New Year’s Day was particularly heavy, much more so than last year. On Sunday there will be an excursion to the Waimakariri Gorge. The train will leave at nine o’clock, and proceed through Rolleston and Sheffield. starting on the return journey at 5.30 p.m. There will also be the usual excursion to Timaru on Sunday. This morning a special horse train left for Greymouth, carrying 48 trotting horses, who will compete at Greymouth to-morrow.
