SOME SUGGESTIONS.

To the Editor. Dear Sir,—This morning I have spent quite two hours in trying to find a dentist open for business, as early on New Year’s morning I had the misfortune to break my plate in half. Of course, on New Year’s Day and yesterday I wasn’t likely to find one doing business, but expected to find my own dentist open, but he wasn’t in town. I tried to find one on fhe telephone list, but it was a nice waste of time turning over page after page to spot a dentist. I would like to make a suggestion to the Post Office authorities that when they issue a new list of subscribers they should place dentists in a separate list, the same as medical men. I wonder, too, how much longer the business people of the south-east part of the city are going to wait for the new post office in Lower High Street without reminding the PostmasterGeneral that he promised to have the building started some time ago. It’s time that disgraceful old building which did duty as a post office in Lower High Street was pulled down, even if no building is erected just yet in its place, as it is a perfect eyesore to look on. It is truly marvellous how the citizens of Christchurch allow things to drift and never utter a word of protest against the way the Government treat them. We should have had a new railway station and a far better post office in Cathedral Square before this if the citizens of the present day had only a little of the enterprise of those of, say, forty or more years ago. Every time a Cabinet Minister passes through Christchurch, a deputation of citizens should wait on him and give him no peace until they have given the Government to understand that this city is not to be neglected any longer as to its public buildings, which are quite out of date, and should be replaced, especially the railway station.—l am, etc., OLD CITIZEN.
