TIMARU CALEDONIAN SPORTS PROVIDE EXCITING CONTESTS .

The South Canterbury Caledonian Society’s fifty-fifth annual sports were concluded yesterday in glorious weather, at the society’s ground. There was a fine attendance of the public, the gate receipts showing an increase over last year. As was the case on the previous day, the professional cycling aroused the keenest interest. Phil O’Shea was prominent again and scored a first in a heat and third in the final of the halfmile handicap, which went to Weir, with Bright two lengths behind. After a great sprint in the Caledonian Wheel Race, he could only scote a fourth, Silvester prevailing - from Weir and Turtill in an inches finish. E. B. Taylor fell in the final and suffered injury to the muscles of his stomach. It was a fine race. Hill, the scratch man, was penned up and could not make up the leeway m the final sprint, Silvester prevailing by half a wheel from Weir, with Hill in fourth place. Ine the final of the three-quarter-mile handicap, O’Shea caught the field half-way on the journey .and came up on the inside, but could not catch the first three. It was a good race, Silvester, Jordan and Watson putting in a great finishing sprint. The twomile South Island championship saw eight men face the starter l’or the final. Flanagan held the lead for the first six laps, for which he collected lap money, and then dropped out. Hill an . f made a dash, Hansen sprinting through from behind. Weir withstood all challenges and beat Hill by inches, with Hansen third. O’Shea did not compete. The running events were of a hign standard. J. P. Bamford and U. H. Gibbons doing well in the sprints, with R- DPoff shining at both short and middle distances. In the 100yds Caledonian Handicap, there was a great finish between the placed men, W. B. Gracie and W. Cartwright respectively. In the 220yds handicap. It. W. Flewellyn and R. Cordery, both of Christchurch, fought out a splendid finish, the former prevailing by half a foot. The ladies’ 7oyds handicap attracted a fair .entry, two heats being run. The winners of the heats. Miss Sievwright and Miss Walton, ran in the final. It was a close lace all the way, the. latter gaining first place bv a very narrow margin. In the one mile amateur handicap, M. M’Donald was the scratch runnter. He overhauled Eaton with two laps to go, and the pair were with the field a.t the last lap, where Eaton retired. M’Donald made a final burst to the front, but Coleman came up and beat him by inches. The running long jump amateur handicap saw some great efforts by R. H. Neville, J. F. Bamford and C. J. Thomp-

son, the first-named prevailing at 21ft Sin over Thompson at 21ft. In the professional event. A. Cameron, on scratch, was outstanding, while P. Keenan and O. Rangi were not far behind. Cameron also gave a sterling performance in the hop, step and jump handicap, which he won at 45ft Gin from Keenan and A. F. Gaffaney, who also did well. The quoits event, the best seen at the sports for many rears, was won by W. Frewen (41, with W. Penman (sc.r) and W. Grant (3) next. In the Cumberland and cateh-as-catch-can wrestling, Johnny M’Bride did very well, winning both events, his long final duel with T. M’Vey in the cat.ch-as-catch-can contest arousing a great deal of interest. N. M’Vey, W. Davidson and A. Opie also gave good exhibitions.
