W.E.A. STUDENTS HAVE DAY AT GERALDINE.

A perfect day favoured the W.E.A. Summer School at Geraldine on Tuesday, when, after the early tutorial classes, the rest of the programme of study was laid aside and the day spent in the country. Peel Forest was first visited, where lunch was served, and Mr R. M. Laing spoke on its flora. The party then moved on to the Peel Forest Station, where they were hospitably entertained at afternoon tea. Mr Acland spoke, and Professor Shelley replied, expressing the thanks of the students for the opportunity of visiting the homestead. On Wednesday the usual programme was resumed. The main lecture was in the hands of Mr J. Johnson. M.A., who spoke on the newer interpretations that were now being made of the figure and character of Queen Elizabeth, e.g., in the works of such writers as Professor M’Laurin and Lytton Strachey. The study of complex a personality as they revealed her made histo_ry a vita! factor in modern education. The individual might thus appreciate the life problem in relation to his or her own situations to-day. The school spent the afternoon on the Waihi stream in a study of the work of a river, where also the billy was boiled. After tea Professor Shelley read Herman Quid’s play, “ The Dance of Life,” and finally a social and dance was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, which was crowded to the doors. New Year’s Day was also marked by a children’s party thoughtfully arranged by some of the women students.
