CANTERBURY TOURNEY REACHES CONCLUSION. The Canterbury Croquet Association's tournament, after lasting: eight days, was concluded last evening, when the open championship was decided, Mrs Palmer defeating Mrs Maddren in the final. Earlier in the day, in the final for the open championship, 3tra Maddren, playing very good croquet, defeated Mrs Hadfleld. The results of yesterday’s contest for the open championship were:— Semi-final. Mrs Maddren defeated Mrs Hadfleld, 26-11. 26-18. , Final. Mrs Palmer defeated Mrs Maddren, 26-6 and 26-21. . _ Play was very even throughout. Mri Palmer’s last round was the best or the day Mrs Maddren let her in and she made a fine break right to the peg with her black ball and finished a couple of turns later. The trophies were presented out on the lawns by Mrs Beanland, one of the vice-presidents. . At the ceremony, Mr E. J. Ross, for the association, said that the tournament had been a very pleasant one. Holding it at Christmas and New Year time probably militated against the numbers of entries. The association was anxious to encourage Junior players and the rank and file in croquet. He hoped that all players at the 1929-.io tournament would meet again at next tournament, which would be on a more extended scale, as the New Zealand championships then would be decided in Christchurch. He thanked Mrs Maddren for carrying out the duties or manager of the tournament, Mr W. M. Tyers for acting as umpire, the United Club for giving the use of its pleasant grounds, absolutely the best place for the tournament that could be found, and the newspapers for reporting the matches and supplying information daily as to the arrangements for the Play.
