The amount of weight an athlete can lose in competition is hardly credible. Yet here are two authentic cases:— “ Little Bill ” Johnston, American lawn tennis player, who normally weighed only 1201 b, lost 141 b in winning his first American championship in 1915. Martin Sheridan, greatest allround American athlete in his day, who normally weighed 1851 b, lost 231 b in one day, 1 winning the allround American championship in 1907. He competed all the afternoon, with only ten minutes’ rest between events.
