All lined up for the GoOdwood Handicap, and backers went strongly for Gray’s mount—Hyde Park (£1285), Merry Mint (£1037). and King Emerald (£930). The first-named pair never looked like being in the monev, but

King Emerald, from a long way back, put in some great work from the home turn, to be beaten only by a neck. The favourite was slow away, Flying Prince jumping out in front from Hakanoa and King Emerald, but the last-named lost his position. Hakanoa took charge then, and led along the back, but, racing through the cutting, Taneriri moved up fast and was leading across the top from Imperial Prince, Panther, Hakanoa, King Emerald, Flying Prince, Prince Yal and Merry Mint. Into the straight the order was: Taneriri, Panther, Imperial Prince, Lady’s Boy and Flying Juliet. At the distance Taneriri looked a comfortable winner, but King Emerald and Antique then came through and Taneriri only lasted long enough to win by a neck from King Emerald, with Antique half a length away. Flying Juliet was next, followed by Hakanoa, Merry Mint, King Midas, Panther and Flying Prince. In the Grandstand Handicap there was a good betting race, with most most money (£3475) entrusted to Goshawk. The next in request were Vertigern (£2056) and Prodice (£1424), while Historic, the winner, carried £556 only, and paid over two figures. Goshawk, Amor, Corinax and Lucy Rose were the early leaders, with Vertigern and Prodice next. Then came Seatown, Spearmiss, High Pitch and Historic. Along the back Amor was in front with Goshawk, followed by Lucy Rose, Vertigern and Prodice, with Corinax, Seatown and Historic next. High Pitch ran to the front crossing the top from Goshawk and Amor, who were followed by Lucy Rose, Prodice and Vertigern. Lucy Rose was first into the straight from High Pitch and Prodice, with Seatown and Historic handy. Historic put in a good run at this stage, and, got up in time to beat Lucy Rose by a neck, with Prodice a similar distance away. High Pitch was fourth. Then came Corinax, Goshawk, Seatown, Amor, Vertigern and Spearmiss. Tenterden and Hampton Park were withdrawn from the Sylvia Handicap, leaving nine two-year-olds to face the starter. The favourite, Awaken, carried £2690, with Tremetus (£1213) and Sight Draft (1077) next in demand. Awaken was first out from Sight Draft. Bells of Shandon, Set Fair and Tremetus, but crossing the top Bells of Shandon had taken charge, attended by Set Fair, Awaken, Sight Draft and Caviare. They turned for home in that order and in a good finish Awaken got the verdict by a length and a half from Bells of Shandon, who beat Betterment by three-quarters of a length. Sight Draft was fourth. Then came Tremetus, Trickle and Caviare. In the Hurdles, King's Guard was

the favourite (£1635), while Elysianor (£1595) and Importer (£1382) also got good support. Pangolin was the first to show up from Elysianor, Serang and Master Roley, but he fell at the second fence, and Serang did likewise at thenext jump. Passing the stand. PrinceLu had charge from Rahepoto, Mashoor and Elysianor, who were followed by Importer, Master Roley and King’s Guard. Along the back the order was much the same. Importer fell at the fourth fence, and Prince Lu still led crossing the top from Elysianor, Mashoor, Rahepoto and King’s Guard. The last-named ran to third as they turned for home, just behind Elysianor and Prince Lu, who fell at the last fence, leaving Elysianor to go on and win by a length and a half from King’s Guard, with Kawini eight lengths away. Rahepoto was fourth, followed by Mashoor, Glenotus and Master Roley. TRACK IN FINE CONDITION. Per Press Association. FEATHERSTON, January 2.
