SEAMAN SENTENCED TO ONE MONTH'S GAOL.

A seafaring man named George Shaw was seen in Madras Street yesterday afternoon sitting on the edge of the footpath, naked except for his shirt. A complaint was made to the police, and Shaw appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, charged with being found drunk in Madras Street and with wilfully and obscenely exposing his person. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Senior-Sergeant Shanahan said that there were a number of women and children living in the neighbourhood. The accused was in a very drunken condition. The Magistrate: I see you have been trailing about all over the country. The accused: I’m a seafaring man. The Magistrate: How much money have you? The accused: They robbed me of everything I had. On the charge of drunkenness, a fine of 10s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, was imposed. On the charge of wilfully exposing himself, the accused was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.
