CONSTABLE READY FOR TROUBLE AT COUNCIL MEETING.
A police constable was present at last evening’s meeting of the City Council. It had been reported that the unemployed intended to make a demonstration, but this failed to eventuate. There was a large attendance of unemployed, but the only audible sign of their presence was when Councillor Thacker asked if the picture theatres would be allowed to open on Christmas Da}' if they gave half the proceeds to the relief of unemployed. At this, one man clapped loudly. When question time was reached, Councillor E. H. Andrews asked if any arrangements had been made to receive a deputation of unemployed. The Mayor (the Rev J. K. Arche’-) said that he had been approached by two gentlemen, in regard to the matter, but it had been decided to discuss the subject in committee. When the council went into committee, the unemployed departed with the other members of the public present.
