A PROMONTORY WITH VERY JAGGED ROCKS

“Long Point is just a promontory with very jagged rocks reaching some distance out to sea, and it is a very dangerous place for any shipping that comes near,” said the Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) to-day. Last January Mr Archer spent a fishing holiday at Owaka, and he got to know the coast-line at Long Point quite well, lie said that there was very deep water close to the rocks, but the presence of reefs made the locality dangerous lor shipping. He had been able to throw a fishing-line from the rocks into forty or fifty feet of water.

The nearest township to Long Point, said the Mayor, was Owaka, about twenty miles distant. It was only a small township, however. Invercargill was not a great distance away as the crow flies, but owing to the rough nature of the country it was a fairly long way by road and rail.
