PROTEST AGAINST ART UNIONS FOR THE AERO CLUBS.
PRESBYTERY WILL MAKE REPRESENTATIONS TO THE GOVERNMENT.
An emphatic protest against Aero Clubs being granted permission to hold lotteries was carried unanimously at this morning’s meeting of the Presbytery.
“That the Christchurch Presbytery desires to make an emphatic protest against the action of the Minister of Internal Affairs in sanctioning the lotteries promoted by the Aero Clubs; that this Presbytery is especially grieved by this action of the Government in view of the assurance given by the late Government that lotteries would be discouraged by the State; that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Assembly’s Public Questions Committee, with a suggestion that they endeavour to organise a united representation of all the Churches to the Government on the subject,” was the motion moved by the Rev Dr R. Erwin.
Dr Erwin said that he was very dissatisfied to read in the newspapers that the Government, in spite of an assurance that no more lotteries would be permitted, was allowing the aero clubs to run lotteries and to use, by these means, the public’s money for semi-Government undertakings. There was no discussion, and the motion was carried unanimously.
