NAVY LEAGUE ESSAY PRIZE WINNERS ARE ANNOUNCED TO-DAY.
The results of the Wellington Navy League Palmer Prize Essay Competition for 1929 are now available. This year’s entries constituted a record since the inception of the competition in 1916. The subjects of the essays in the competition were:—Senior, “The Freedom of the Seas”; junior, “Captain Cook and his Voyages.” Senior. Boys: Prize winner, Francis Howard Harris (Waitaki Boys’ High School) ; next in merit, Lawrence Wilson (Grevmouth Technical High School); Robert Adams (Wellington College) ; Percy Arnold Muirhead (Waitaki Boys’ High School). Girls: Prize winner, Winifred M’Quilkan (Southland Girls’ High School) ; next in merit, Jean Lesley Morland (Epsom Girls’ High School); Olive Mary Allen (New Plymouth Girls’ High School) ; Nancy Caughley (Wellington Girls’ College) ; special prize, Isobel Margaret Broad (St Stephen’s School, Marton). Junior. Boys: Prize winner, Ralph Armatage Holmes (Palmerston North Boys’ High School) ; next in merit, Gerald Blake (“Star of the Sea” Convent, Seatown); Owen Charles M’Kibbin (Onewhero, Auckland) ; Eric Edney (Victoria Avenue, Wanganui) : special prize, Arthur Ashworth (Galloway, Otago). Girls: Prize winner, Alice May Foster (Ngatea D.H.S.), Thames); next in merit, Ruth Awdrey Andrews (Brightwater, Nelson); Winifred Farmer (Westown, New Plymouth) ; May Will (Levin D.H.S.). Junior Secondary. Boys: Prize winner, Selwyn Grave (Waitaki Boys’ High School) ; next in merit, Stephen Cathcart Miller (Waitaki Boys’ High School) ; Paul Nestor Verschaffelt (Wellington College) ; Selwyn Musson (Technical High School Greymouth). Girls: Prize winner, Dulcie Pepper (Girls’ High School, New Plymouth) ; next in merit, Beryl Mulcahy (Wellington Girls’ College) ; Joan Barnard Ross (Girls’ High School, New Plymouth) ; Kathleen Ross (Wellington Girls’ College) .
