LEADING PLAYERS WILL COMPETE IN CHESS TOURNEY.
(Special to the “Star.”) WANGANUI, December 10. The thirty-ninth New Zealand chess tourney, to decide the championship of New Zealand, will commence in Wanganui on Boxing Day. The following competitors will participate: J. A. Erskine (the present champion of New Zealand), C. J. S. Purdy (champion of New South Wales), G. Gunderson (twelve times champion of Victoria), J. C. Grierson (Auckland champion and ex-champion of New Zealand), G. P. Anderson (ex-champion of Wellington), F. K. Kelling (ex-champion of New Zealand), E. H. Severne 'champion of Nelson), E. E. Hicks (champion of the Ngaio Club), K. Beyer (a recent arrival from Denmark, where he played with much success), E. Rutherford (Taranaki champion), P. Kumrqer (Wairarapa champion), H. Topp (a promising from the Ngaio Chess Club), W. J. Fairburn (a wellknown congress player from Wellington), R. O. Scot (a promising colt from the Wanganui Club), and L. Pleasants (ex-champion of Wanganui). It is to be regretted that J. P. Dunlop, of Oamaru, J. A. Moir, of Auckland, and A. W. Gyles, of Wellington, are unable to take part this time.
