Sport And Sportsmen.

F. E. Woolley, E. Bowley and W. Cornford, members of the English cricket team, will arrive In Wellington on Tuesday by the Marama from Sydney. Bowley is reported to be suffering from acute sciatica, and he will consult a specialist immediately on his arrival. Australia could well do with the spirit of Harry Trdtt hovering aloft for a season (says a Sydney cricket writer). He was a slow bowler himself, and no man knew better than he how to use the slow bowler to advantage. Trott, of course, was a rare captain. It seemed to be born in him, and his judgment became perfected playing under and against distinguished men in the game. Another man who knew how to handle slow bowling was Warwick Armstrong. Like Trott, he, too, was an exponent of the gentle art, though, unlike the others, he could, and did, keep a length. Armstrong never itched eternally to have the bosey man trundling. He had the patience to persevere with others as well as the slow bowlers. And Armstrong is one of the few men who never lost a test match while leading the forces against England. The Northern League team to play Australia at Wigan on December 4 is:— Full-back: J. Sullivan (Wigan). Three-quarters: L. Brown (Wigan), A. Atkinson (Castleford), F. O’Rourke (Leeds), S. Smith (Wakefield Trinity). Five-eighth: D. M. Davies (Warrington ). Half-back: J. Oster (Oldham). Forwards: L. Hutt (St Helens), N. Bentham (Halifax), H. Thomas (Leeds), A. Fildes (St Helens’ Recreation), W. Wood (Leigh), F. Butters (S win ton). Reserves: M. Rosser (Leeds), L. Mason (Wigan). Brown, Hutt and Mason are New Zealanders, while O’Rourke is from Sydney. The brightest batting in the match between St Albans and Old Collegians on Saturday was provided by R. O. Talbot, who, opening with H. M. Chrystall, knocked up 25 in fast time. His strokes all round the wicket had plenty of weight behind them. Talbot went for the bowling from the start, and though he did not look like a stayer, he made the pace hot while he lasted.
