The temperature during the afternoon soared to 99 degrees, and thousands of people flocked to the beaches, many bathing until the early hours of the morning. Twelve thousand sought refuge from the heat at Coogee’s shark-proof enclosure. There were numerous accidents of a more or less serious nature, and the life-savers did splendid work.
