RACING NOTES.

- N °minations for the Westland Racing Club’s meeting will close at S3O p.m. to-morrow. ** * * , T , he J 3 °? k l t edition of the New Zealand Turf Register has made its appearance, showing the public form of all horses who have raced at totalisator meetings in the Dominion from the begimng of the season up to December 1. As usual, the racing and trotting results are given separately, each wth its complete index, which enables the form of each horse to be traced easily. The handy little volume has been pul> lished at an opportune time, on the eve of the holiday fixtures, when followers of both branches of the sport be glad the opportunity to study the form of horses who are to compete at meetings in various parts of the Dominion. The book is published by the Christchurch Press Companv.

The track work at Riccarton this morning did not provide much excitement. Most of the trainers had their teams out, but the horses who raced at Ashburton were on the easy list, while not many of the others were given serious tasks. In the meantime the trainers are content to give them useful work, sufficient to hold the condition they have got. ** * * As usual, P. V'. Mason worked his team the reverse way this morning. Honour, Jaleux, Greenaway and Praise who are being got ready for Auckland’ were allowed to stride along freely, but they could have done better. They all look well, and Honour, in particular, may be an improved horse when next he races. * & * %z Count Cavour had Amor as a mate this morning for the last six furlongs of a mile, which he reeled off in lmin 45sec, after a slow first furlong. He finished on strongly, and he looks in great health.

Paquito and Tcheka were associated over six furlongs this morning. The time, lmin 21 2-ssec, was slow, but both horses were going very comfortably # * * 2J«

Bladon (R. M’Seveney) -was schooled over two hurdles this morning, but his display was not very attractive.

4* * * * Pangolin is striding along freely in his track work, and he galloped a mile very attractively this morning. A. E. Wormald has him looking very well at present. He has built up and improved a lot- in appearance since he was relegated to hurdle racing, in which department he is likely to show still further improvement as the season advances.

Flair may be included""in F. Christmas’s team for the West Coast during the holidays, after which she may visit Trentham for the Wellington Cup meeting in January. This well-grown filly is a useful galloper, and she should get some more money later in the season in hack events. She hit out well in a half-mile sprint this morning. * 4: * & The speedy sprinter Caterpillar has left J. B. Pearson's stable, and has gone to Wingatui, where she will be trained by D. P. Wilson. Her owner, Mr J. Richardson, resides in Dunedin so that the change of quarters represents a natural desire to have his horses trained where he can watch their progress. * * * *

The Waikouaiti Racing Club has received an exceptionally good list of nominations for the meeting to be held on New Year’s Day, and, with quality strongly in evidence, there should be some great racing. The club deserves well, as it puts out a well-endowed programme, thanks to the good fortune of a holiday racing date.

Tcheka, Subdivision, Bonrose, Master Clarence, Thurso and Coupling are Riccarton horses with engagements at the Waikouaiti meeting.

Spearmiss may be seen to advantage in the Bolton Handicap, the chief event bn the opening day at Woodville.

Aspiring should be in the money in sprint events at Woodville, though there are a few smart gallopers to contend with.

11. Gray has had his injured shoulder X-rayed. The bone is cracked, not broken, and he hopes to be quite fit again by Christmas.

Royal Duke will be H. B. Lorigan’s only representative at Woodville. Lorigan will take a big team to Hawera, and subsequently they will be divided at Palmerston North, some being left to race at Christmas time at Awapuni, and the others being sent on to Auckland.

The light-weight rider C. Broughton, who was injured at Otaki, was discharged from hospital last week, but it is not anticipated that he will be back in the saddle before Christmas. A G. Murray, who injured the sinews of his right hand in the same upset, will likewise- be out of the game till the holiday season. * * * * The Awapuni trainer G. Jones has a newcomer to his stable in Battle Torque, a five-year-old mare by Martian—Torquate, Mr W. H. Gaisford having purchased her from Mr O. S. Watkins, of Wellington. Although *he has failed in her racing to date, she might give good service as a brood mare. * * * :!= The Sydney writer “ Pilot ** states that the purchase of Rabbi for a patron of M. Poison’s stable might have been completed but for the owner of Rabbi stipulating that delivery should not be taken until after the meeting at Feilding. This did not suit the would-be buyer. If the horse won, he was cei tain to advance in the opinion of Aus tralian handicappers, and if he failed he would possibly have been in the position of giving more for him than he was worth. The deal, therefore, fell through. * Sje * 5}C According to the latest issue of the Sydney “ Herald ” to hand, the well* known racing man Eric Connolly, who was reputed to have made a little for tune over Nightmarch’s victories in the Epsom Handicap and the Melbourne Cup, had then been seriously ill for some days. His condition early in the week was said to have occasioned concern to his friends, but he showed a distinct improvement on the day the mail left Sydney. * * * ❖ A Melbourne message states that the damage sustained by the crack jockey W. Duncan when his horse fell with him at the Epsom meeting last month is more serious than at first thought. The result of an X-ray examination dis closes that he received very serious in juries to the spine in the region of the neck, and he is likely to be confined to his bed for a much longer period than was anticipated. sje s£ aje According to an Australian exchange, the latest move in Victoria is one that will meet with the approval of many people in this country who have the welfare of the Turf at heart. Trainers in. Victoria have had a fresh responsibility placed upon them. It is for them to say that an apprentice rider is forward enough in his education in the saddle to fit him to go into public. A permit will not be granted unless the application is signed by at least six trainers who have seen the boy at work on the tracks. From this plan a good deal is hoped for, and probably results will justify it.

TROTTING NOTES.

Nominations for the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting will close on Wednesday at 9 pm. * * * *

Acceptances for the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting will close on Friday at 5 p.m.

The New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting will be held on Saturday. From a big list of nominations the club has attracted a succession of good fields and the racing should be of a high standard.

t-* * * * * Mr A. R. Allardyce has been appointed judge for the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club’s meeting.

Mr J. R. Corrigan intends to be well represented at the Christmas meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club. He will have a team of five carrying his colours, and the ones battling for the big stakes will be Kohara and Sister Beatrice. Kohara was the unlucky horse of the Cup meeting twelve months ago.

It is reported from Auckland that the Derby candidate First Flight is a bit light in condition, but this is due to her having been suffering with some trouble to the neck. This has been attended to, and the daughter of Blue Mountain King should soon pick up. She has only been jogging since the Otahuhu meeting, and has ample time yet to be ready to run well in the Derby on December 27.

Kennerley, will be strongly represented at the Christmas meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club. He has booked accommodation for half a dozen ; orses. Peter Bingen will be one of the team, and his appearance at the meeting will add interest to the racing.

It is a long time since First Carbine had a race. The big pacer is cutting on in years and will have to be as good as ever he was to win a race. He has been doing light work at Auckland for some time and will be seen out at the Christmas meeting.

According to a report from Auckland, W. Cock bill has his favourite, All Bell, doing steady exercise. The’ old horse failed at the Otahuhu meeting but he can never be counted out and he has downed more fast horses in his time than has perhaps any other pacer in Auckland. Cockbill has also Rosie Thorpe in work. This mare showed a lot of speed a couple of seasons ago when in work, but she did not go steady in her races. Now that she has had a good spell she may be more solid.

The Auckland trainer* L. M’Mahon. is confining his attention at present to the requirements of Gold Jacket Torpedo Huon, and Gold Seam. The last-named will not be required till after the holidays, but Torpedo Huon and Gold Jacket will be stepping out with the best at the end of the month at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting. Torpedo Huon is said to be a better horse now than a few weeks back. Gold Jacket’s condition appears to be right, but he lost a lot of friends by his failures at the New Zealand Cup meeting last month.

TRENTHAM NOTES. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, December 9. Those trainers who worked early at Tre.vtham this morning had all the best of it, for about 6.15 heavy rain commenced again and fell for about three-quarters of an hour. Previously, the grass track, which was, in general use, was in quite fair order, although naturally a trifle soft. After the rain it was very soft and heavy again. 11. Telford was the first out and sprinted Open Cheque. Kiriana pleased by running six furlongs in lmin 22}sec. He looks a much improved gelding. Royal Game appreciated the soft track and rolled into his task in good style. Concentrate and Diana's Lad galloped a mile in lmin 48sec, with Concentrate n&turally doing best at the finish. Diana’s Lad also went well. Subsequently he was schooled over four flights of hurdles, giving a good display. Ex Dono and Footpad sprinted four furlongs in 55£sec. Rory Mor and Dolomite, with good weights up, galloped seven furlongs in lmin 34*sec. They were accompanied by Oral for five furlongs, but then she was pulled up. Oral has done well lately. Miss Ransom ran the last four of six furlongs in 53£sec, and did it well. Cimabue was worked after the rain, and on the sloppy track he was kept to three-quarter pace, but revelled in his work.

Habit and Arikinui strode along in a working gallop. Aspiring was given a short sprint. Both she and Silver Paper have done well since being quartered at Trentham.

Historic, who was physicked on Saturday, was given trwo rounds of easy pace work. He looks well.

On Saturday morning Appeal and Intruder both worked along well. C. Pritchard, who is at present at Trentham, is engaged in breaking in a youngster.

L. Daly, the North Island horseman, leaves for the south to-night. He is joining C. Gieseler’s stable at Wingatui, and will do the lightweight riding for the establishment, commencing with the Dunedin summer meeting. Daly can go to the scale at 7st 31b.
