MANY MAKE SUNDAY TRIP TO TIMARU.
SOME PASSENGERS CAUGHT WRONG TRAIN
Approximately 1150 people visited Timaru by train yesterday. Of these, 800 went from Christchurch. The new arrangement whereby two trains ran from Christchurch to Timaru commenced yesterday. On the first train, which stopped at intermediate stations, there were 302 passengers when the train left Christchurch, and the greatest number on the train on any part of the trip was 400. The second train, which left at 9.10 a.m., carried 612 through passengers. A train was also run from Dunedin to Timaru. and this had 250 through passengers. The up train from Timaru to Christchurch carried 400 passengers. Some of the passengers from Christchurch were apparently not conversant with the fact that the second train to Timaru, which left at 9.10 a.m., did not take passengers for intermediate stations. This train runs to a very fast schedule, and in order to maintain it stops werg only made at Addington and Ashburton. The Ashburton stop was merely for refreshments, and was not for the purpose of picking up and setting down passengers. Similarly, the second train from Timaru on Sunday evenings, which leaves at 6.5 p.m., does not normally stop for passengers en route. A few passengers for intermediate stations boarded the wrong trains yesterday, and stops had to be made. The additional stops will not be made in future, as through passengers expect the train to run to schedule.
