STEANS CUP MATCH. SOUTH CANTERBURY DEFEAT CHRISTCHURCH. The annual match between the Christchurch and South Canterbury bowling: centres for the Steans Cup was played in Timaru on Saturday afternoon on the West End green. Although the wind was troublesome in the early part of the afternoon the green was in splendid condition, playing fast and very true. Both centres were strongly represented and competition was very keen. First one team then the being in front. Apart from Saturday's match the cup had been played for six times. The first contest in 1923-24 was won by South Canterbury. The following year Christchurch regained the cup, but Tost it again in the 1925-26 season. The next two years, however, saw Christchurch in possession of the trophy, hut the cup again came south last season. At the fourteenth head of Saturday’s match the score was: Christchurch 98. South Canterbury 01. However, at the twenty-first head the home side side had scored 152 against the visitors’ 139. Christchurch did its utmost t<. overtake their opponents during the last four heads, but the match ended with South Canterbury five points in the lead. The following is the result. Tim annual match betwem the city howling clubs and the country and seaside clubs was played on Saturday, the country and seaside greens being utilised.
