SPEEDWAY ATTRACTS BIG ATTENDANCE.

H. MANGHAM THRILLS CROWD IN SATURDAY’S MILE SCRATCH EVENT.

Although Saturday night’s meeting at Monica Park Stadium was not listed as a big draw, it was attended by a large crowd, the official figures being 4000. This testifies to the success which has attended the introduction of broadsiding to Christchurch on a larger scale than had been attempted before. The attendance represented a drop on the figures for the previous week, when the programme contained several special attractions

Some excellent racing was seen during the evening, the star performer being H. Mangham, who put up some fast times and treated the spectators to a series of thrills. He won the Speedway Mile scratch race. The Gold Sash Match Race, of four laps, was won by J. Carter. Results:— METROPOLITAN OPEN HANDICAP (Four laps, one mile). First heat: H. Mangham (scr) 1, C Kennedy (6sec) 2. Time—lmin 49 2-ssec. Second heat: A. Brown (6sec) 1, E. Marsh (4sec) 2. Time—lmin 46sec. Thirc heat: E. Pyke (9sec) 1. Time—lmin 51 3-ssec. Fourth heat: F. Sharman (ssec) 1, R. Russell (Bsec) 2. Time—lmin 50sec. First semi-final: Brown 1, Mangham 2. Time—lmin 41sec. Second semi-final: Sharman 1, Russell 2. Time—lmin 45sec. Final. Brown 1 Mangham 2 Sharman 3 Mangham made a proper race of it and pulled up to second place on the second lap, but could not reduce the distance on Brown, who had maintained his lead from the start. He won by five lengths. Time—lmin 40 4-ssec. GOLD SASH MATCH RACE. (Four laps, rolling start.) J. Carter 1 Carter won both races for this trophy. In the first heat he took the lead from the start and held it all the way. Time —lmin 40sec. In the second heat P. Lunn held the lead for two laps, but gave place then to Carter. Time—lmin 36sec. SUMNER HANDICAP. (One mile, four laps.) First heat: R. Hore (scr) 1, E. Pye (4sec) 2. Time--lmin 46 3-ssec. Second heat: E. Pyke (scr) 1, C. Kennedy (6sec) 2. Time—lmin 58sec. Final. Hore 1 Pyke 2 Pyke finished up almost a lap behind, as his machine failed to start, giving Hore a start of half a lap. Time —lmin 42sec. SPEEDWAY MILE SCRATCH RACE. (Rolling start.) First heat: H.
