WHIPPET RACING AT BRIGHTON SEES SOME GOOD FINISHES.

On Saturday the New Zealand Whippet Racing Club held a meeting- at the New Brighton trotting ground, when a very fair attendance of spectators witnessed some excellent racing. Competition throughout was keen and the outstanding performers wore Mr R. Frew’s Captain Rose and Messrs W. Bates and J. R. D. Johns’s Winning Hit, both of which scored a first and a second in finals during the afternoon. The following were the results:— STAHMORE HURDLES. 200 yards, over six flights of hurdles. First heat: Mr V. J. Drake’s Betty (26yds) 1, Mr A. Musson’s Lone Star (ecr) 2. A great race and run in very fast time, Betty getting home by a length. Rosenor was third close up. Time—l4sec. Second heat: Mr W. Robinson’s Miss Comedy (4yds) 1, Mr J. Canell’s Hercules (24yds) 2. Miss Comedy won by a length and a half, with five yards between Hercules and Comedy Lass. Time—l 4 9-10 sec. , Final. Lone Star l Betty 2 In the final Bstty led from the start, but Lone Star came with a great burst at the finish and just got up to win by a ne'k. Miss Comedy was third. Time —l4 7-10 sec. DRAKE PUPPY HANDICAP. 150yds. First heat: Mr L. G. Blum sky’s Lord Argyle (Byds) 1, Mrs C. S. Forbes’s White Pepper Clyd) 2. Owing to a mistake on the part of the marksmen the first heat was run over 200 yards, Mrs E. Dlbley’s Bumble Rose (Byds) being first and Lord Argyle second. It was decided to run the race again, with the above result. Time—lo 3-ssec. Second heat: Messrs W. Bates and J R. D. Johns’s Winning Hit (2yds) 1, Mr R. Frew’s Captain Rose (9yds) 2. A very close finish. Winning Hit beating Captain Rose by a neck. Hercules was third- Time—lo 2-ssee. Final. Winning Hit 1 Captain Rose 2 Practically a repetition of the second heat, the winner getting home by a head, with the rest of the field well back. Time—lOJsec. VICTOR HANDICAP, 200yds, fiat. First Mr J. R. D. Johns’s Fleetwing (15yds) 1 Mr W. F. Grenfell’s Commander (syds) 2 Fleetwing was never headed, winning comfortably by a couple of lengths. Gold Tinge was just beaten for second place. Time—l2 3-10 sec. LINWOOD HANDICAP, 200yds, flatSecond class. First heat: Messrs W. Bates and J. R. D. Johns’s Winning Hit (13yds) 1, Mr R. Frew’s Captain Rose (20yds) 2. A great race. Winning Hit getting up in the last few strides. Brown Betty was third, a length behind Captain Rose. Time—l2 3-10 sec. Second heat: Messrs H. Rhind and J. R. D. Johns’s Heatherbell (13yds) 1, Mr O. T. Owens’s Captain Argyle (22yds) 2. Won easing up by a length, with Chorus Girl a like distance away third. Bon Rose was scratched. Time —l2 3-ssec. Final. Captain Rose l Winning Hit 2 The best race of the day, Captain Rose running with great determination to (5i ntcli the victory by a neu»l. lleather-l.t-11 was a length away third. Time—--3 2sec.
