GARDEN FETE.
In the picturesque grounds kindlylent by Mr Digby Neave, Mather’s Road, Spreydon, a garden fete was held on Saturday afternoon, in connection with St Martin’s Church, Spreydon The sum of £l2O. resulting from the fete, will go towards the enlargement of the Sunday School and the improvement funds of the church. Mr G. T. Mulcock, in declaring the fete officially open, explained why it was being held, and thanked Mr and Mrs Neave for their kindness in lend ing their grounds. The Salvation Army Band provided a musical programme, and a maypole dance was performed by some of the Sunday School children, under the direction of Miss M. Sloan. There were several amusing side-shows and guessing competitions, and the children delighted in pony rides, under Mr Neave’s guidance. A baby show caused much interest, and Mrs R. W. Anderson and Sister Jones kindly acted as judges. The prizes were awarded as follow: Under nine months—Boys: Bruce Wood 1, Peter Sumner 2. Girls: Doro thv Turner. Nine to eighteen months— Boys: Peter Merrett 1, Norman Wright 2 Girls: Alma Dobson 1, Ngaire Uprit chard 2. , The stalls, set out in the shelter of the trees, were in the charge of the following:— _ . Produce —Mesdames Philpot, Peate and Yeatman. Cakes —Mesdames Moore, Bell, Humrr. and Coulter. Elevenpence half-penny stall—Mesdames Rose and Chappie. Baby stall—Misses M. Sloan and H Street. _ , Work stall —Mesdames F. A. Cocks Hayman, Smail and Merritt. Sweets —Mesdames Andrew and Brown. Copper trail—Mesdames P Olifi anq A. Unwin. Fancy stall- -Girls’ Club. Afternoon tea —Mesdames A Cox. Pierson, Sloan, Lovedav and Shields. Book stall—Mrs Wilkins and Miss Merritt. Christmas tree—Misses Enscr and B N eave. _____________
