CARNIVAL AT REDCLIFFS.

On Saturday afternoon the Redcliffs School Committee, together with the Redcliffs Burgesses’ Association, held a carnival in the school grounds for the purpose of raising funds for the school and for borough improve ments. Included in the effort were stalls, sideshows and competitions, to gether with a dance in the evening. The proceedings were opened in the afternoon by Mr F. Oldridge who out lined the objects of the carnival as well as the work done by the combined committee and asked the Mayor. Mr W. H. Nicholson, to declare it open. Mr Nicholson expressed his pleasure at being present. He congratulated the committee on the work they had done and said he hoped that the people would generously respond to the appeal that was being made on behalf of the school and improvements in that part of the borough. He had much pleasure in declaring the cairni val open. Prior to the formal openipg, the children of the public school, gaily clad in a bright array of fancy dresses, formed in procession at the Redcliffs stores and marched through the main street to the school grounds. There was a large attendance of the public in spite of the nor’-west gale, and special precautions were taken to protect the stalls by means of scrim curtains. The grounds were made attractive with festoons of multi-coloured flags, and bunting hung from the main buildings to the side fences, and great care had been taken by the stall owners to decorate their stands with greenery and ornamental drapings. Brisk bust ness was done throughout the after noon and there was a large attendance at the dance in the evening. Amongst the items of special inter est were the baby show and fanev dress competition. The former was won by Baby Bassett, under six months, with Baby Prebble second: and Baby Cook and the Purvis twins were placed respectively first and second in the under twelve months class. The prizes for the fancy dres* were awarded as follows:—Giris—best dressed, Philomena Smith (Cherry Ripe) 1, Marjorie Senior (Irish Colleen' 2. Boys—best dressed, J. Fowle* (Swagger) 1, Warren Hart and Brien Hart (Dutch Boys) equal 2. Girls most original—R. M. Elder (Orang* Smile) 1, Pat Alexander (Every Lady’Journal) 2. Boys—most original, B Lofe (Absent Minded Professor) 1, Max Cooper (Kellog’s Wafers) 2. The Mayor’s special prizes were won by “Daisy Girl,” “Mother Hubbard,” “Red Ridinghood,” “Sailor,” and “The Troubador.” The following were the stall holders • Sweets and ice creams, Mesdames A Shand, C F. Pratt, D. Coleman, G Burgess, C. Hart, Miss Phyllis Smith Messrs C. F. Pratt and G. Burgess; produce, Mesdames Williams, J. Darling and Simpson; cake stall, Mesdame<= Pragnell and B. Orrie; fancy work Mesdames Le Page and Houghton. The following are the results of the cooking competition. Children’s class—Gwen Gee, sponge cake 1, and pastry 1. Scones—Edna Stratford 1.
