CHANGES IN WORKERS’ COMPENSATION ACT ARE RECOMMENDED

With regard to the committee which it is proposed to set up to go into the matter of the Workers’ Compensation Act, it was decided at the meeting of the Trades and Labour Council on Saturday evening to write to the Minister of Labour (the Hon W. A, Veitch) requesting that attention should be given to the question of a clause providing for compensation for men suffering from diseases arising from their contact with tar, pitch, bitumen, mineral oils etc. It was stated that cancer was one of the diseases with which this would deal. Similar clauses are said to be contained in the acts operating in England, America and Western Australia. It was also decided to recommend that provision should be made for men who through their work become partially blind. It was decided to support the nomination of the following officers for the national executive President Mr R Semple; vice-president, Mr F. R Cooke-secretary-treasurer, Mr Walter Nash; district national representative Mr f’ R. Cooke.
