ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY TO STAGE THIRD CONCERT ON WEDNESDAY NEXT.

The third and final concert of the current season will be given by the | Christchurch Orchestral Society in the Municipal Concert Hall on Wednesday next at 8 p.m. The programme, which should prove exceptionally attractive, will include Wagner’s “Parsifal,” Act 1, finale, in which the full orchestra of seventy performers, conducted by Professor Oddone Savini, will be assisted by the choir of Holy Trinity Church, Avonside, of thirty voices, including the boys, who have been specially trained by Mr Arthur Lilly, A.R.C.O. Another considerable work is the rendering of the complete “Symphony in D Minor” (four movements), Ossar Franck. This, the only Symphony that Franck ever completed, is at once one of the greatest and most popular works of its kind. Chamber music, particularly the string quartet, has been for many years sadly neglected in Christchurch. At this concert will be the first public appearance of the Christchurch String Quartet, comprising Professor Savini (viola), Mr Arthur Gordon and Miss Gladys Vincent (violins) and Mr Francis Bate (’cello,) who will play the “Nocturne” and “Scherzo” from a quartet by Borodine. Othter numbers include overture to “Hansel and Gretel” (Humperdinck), Suite de Ballet, “Coppelia” (Delibes) and “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2” (Liszt). The booking procedure will be the same as for the previous concerts this year. On Monday and Tuesday the plan will be open for subscribers only. On Wednesday morning about 450 seats will be available to the general public at Is 6d (reserved). Those unsold will be available at the door on Wednesday evening for Is.
