TEST TRIAL MATCH OPENS AT SYDNEY.

JACKSON BATS IN MASTERLY STYLE.

< United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, December 6. The test trial match was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, to-day, between Ryder’s and Woodfull’s teams. The weather was perfect and seven thousand spectators were present. Ryder won the toss. The opening partnership by Ponsford and Jackson of 278 runs was the feature of the day s play. Both batsmen passed the century. Jackson in delightful mood made many graceful and masterly hits. His 182 was compiled in 187 minutes and included twenty-seven fours and one sixer. On the contrary, Ponsford displayed restraint throughout, for his 131, which occupied 242 minutes and included ten fours and one sixer. Both virtually threw away their wickets, being caught in the out-field while attempting big hits. Ryder was caught in a similar fashion. Marks and M’Cabe batted lyThe match, so far, revealed no bowler of oustanding ability. Six were tried, including Wall, Hornibrook, Fairfax, Blackie, Bradman and Burrows, the latter being a Tasmanian. All of them were slogged unmercifully.

Ellis and Burrows replaced Oldfield and A’Beckett in Woodfull’s team. The score at stumps was 433 for four (Ponsford 131-r Jackson 182, Marks not out 64. Ryder 6, M’Cabe 35, Horrocks, West Australia, not out 8).
