The weather was perfect and seven thousand spectators were present. Ryder won the toss. The opening partnership by Ponsford and Jackson of 278 runs was the feature of the day s play. Both batsmen passed the century. Jackson in delightful mood made many graceful and masterly hits. His 182 was compiled in 187 minutes and included twenty-seven fours and one sixer. On the contrary, Ponsford displayed restraint throughout, for his 131, which occupied 242 minutes and included ten fours and one sixer. Both virtually threw away their wickets, being caught in the out-field while attempting big hits. Ryder was caught in a similar fashion. Marks and M’Cabe batted lyThe match, so far, revealed no bowler of oustanding ability. Six were tried, including Wall, Hornibrook, Fairfax, Blackie, Bradman and Burrows, the latter being a Tasmanian. All of them were slogged unmercifully.
